Experiences of discrimination, paternal support, and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) in the Miehr study, Houston, Texas
BACKGROUND: Discrimination is a psychosocial stressor that, through activation of stress-response pathways, may influence risk of adverse perinatal health outcomes. However, few studies have evaluated the association between discrimination and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP), and none have explored effect modification by race or paternal support, which may buffer the adverse effects of discrimination. METHODS: We included 1,847 non-Hisp…

Assessing Metal Exposures Among Children Living in Environmental Justice Communities Near Metal Recycling Facilities in Houston, Texas
Findings point to the need for adequately powered studies among potentially vulnerable children living in EJ communities to profile metal exposures and identify important sources of these exposures
Air Pollution, Residential Greenness and Metabolic Dysfunction during Early Pregnancy in the INfancia y Medio Ambiente (Inma) Cohort
Despite extensive study, the role of air pollution in gestational diabetes remains unclear, and there is limited evidence of the beneficial impact of residential greenness on metabolic dysfunction during pregnancy. We used data from mothers in the Spanish INfancia y Medio Ambiente (INMA) Project from 2003-2008. We obtained spatiotemporally resolved estimates of fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) and nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) exposures in early preg…
What Accounts for Physical Activity during Pregnancy? A Study on the Sociodemographic Predictors of Self-Reported and Objectively Assessed Physical Activity during the 1st and 2nd Trimesters of Pregna…
Physical activity (PA) during pregnancy has positive health implications for both mother and child. However, current literature indicates that not all pregnant women meet the international recommendations for PA (at least 150 min/week of moderate-to-vigorous PA). The main objective of this study was to assess PA levels among pregnant women in the city of Donostia-San Sebastian and identify their main sociodemographic predictors. We recruited 441 …
Testing the Multiple Pathways of Residential Greenness to Pregnancy Outcomes Model in a Sample of Pregnant Women in the Metropolitan Area of Donostia-San Sebastián
Residential greenness may positively impact diverse human health indicators through the reduction of air pollution, the improvement of psychological health, and the promotion of physical activity. Previous studies indicate a weak but positive association with pregnancy outcomes. Our aim was to test the multiple pathways from residential greenness to pregnancy outcomes model, using residential NO 2 concentrations, psychological health, and moderat…
The Intercontinental Terminals Chemical Fire Study
On Sunday, 17 March 2019, a fire erupted at the Intercontinental Terminals Company (ITC, Deer Park, La Porte, TX, USA), resulting in a large fire that blazed for several days. In response, we rapidly launched disaster response activities to monitor air pollutants (total volatile organic compounds (TVOCs), fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ), black carbon (BC), and ultra-fine particles (UFPs) during the fire in two affected communities. To assess im…
Exploring Disparities in Maternal Residential Proximity to Unconventional Gas Development in the Barnett Shale in North Texas
Background : This study explores sociodemographic disparities in residential proximity to unconventional gas development (UGD) among pregnant women. Methods : We conducted a secondary analysis using data from a retrospective birth cohort of 164,658 women with a live birth or fetal death from November 2010 to 2012 in the 24-county area comprising the Barnett Shale play, in North Texas. We considered both individual- and census tract-level indicato…
A Mixed-Methods Study to Examine the Role of Psychosocial Stress and Air Pollution on Hypertension in Mexican-Origin Hispanics
Our findings add to the evidence of a positive association between individual and family stressors on hypertension among Hispanics and other racial/ethnic groups. Contrary to previous studies reporting positive associations, our results suggest that long-term exposure to O 3 may be inversely related to prevalent hypertension
Accessing Disadvantaged Pregnant Women in Houston, Texas, and Characterizing Biomarkers of Metal Exposure
Communities of color or low socioeconomic status are disproportionately affected by metal exposure given spatial variability of the ambient levels of these contaminants. Despite this, there is little research characterizing metal concentrations in blood among disadvantaged populations in the U.S., especially among pregnant women who are particularly vulnerable and difficult to access. Thus, we conducted a pilot study among disadvantaged pregnant …
