The Target Study
We present a conceptual model to measure disparity-the target study-where social groups may be similarly situated (i.e., balanced) on allowable covariates. Our model, based on a sampling design, does not intervene to assign social group membership or alter allowable covariates. To address nonrandom sample selection, we extend our model to generalize or transport disparity or to assess disparity after an intervention on eligibility-related variabl…
Geographic Variation in Racial Disparities in Receipt of High-Dose Influenza Vaccine Among US Older Adults
Multilevel Resilience and HIV Virologic Suppression Among African American/Black Adults in the Southeastern United States
Social support, psychosocial risks, and cardiovascular health
Overall, we observed no strong evidence for an association between social support and CVH. However, some psychosocial risks may be modifiers. Prospective studies are needed to assess the social support-CVH relationship by psychosocial risks in racially/ethnically diverse populations
Examining relationships between perceived neighborhood social cohesion and ideal cardiovascular health and whether psychosocial stressors modify observed relationships among JHS, Mesa, and Masala part…
We did not find much support for an association between neighborhood social cohesion and LS7, but did find evidence of effect modification. Some of the effect modification results operated in unexpected directions. Future studies should examine neighborhood social cohesion more comprehensively and assess for effect modification by psychosocial stressors
Development of Long and Short Forms of the Multilevel Resilience Resource Measure for African American/Black Adults Living with HIV
A Concept Mapping Study to Understand Multilevel Resilience Resources Among African American/Black Adults Living with HIV in the Southern United States
The Relationship Between Discrimination and Missed HIV Care Appointments Among Women Living with HIV
The relationship between adverse neighborhood socioeconomic context and HIV continuum of care outcomes in a diverse HIV clinic cohort in the Southern United States
Retention in care and viral suppression are critical to delaying HIV progression and reducing transmission. Neighborhood socioeconomic context (NSEC) may affect HIV care receipt. We therefore assessed NSEC's impact on retention and viral suppression in a diverse HIV clinical cohort. HIV-positive adults with ≥1 visit at the Vanderbilt Comprehensive Care Clinic and 5-digit ZIP code tabulation area (ZCTA) information between 2008 and 2012 contribute…
Resilience and HIV
We use a socioecological model of health to define resilience, review the definition and study of resilience among persons living with human immunodeficiency virus (PLWH) in the existing peer-reviewed literature, and discuss the strengths and limitations of how resilience is defined and studied in HIV research. We conducted a review of resilience research for HIV-related behaviors/outcomes of antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence, clinic attenda…
Examining neighborhood and interpersonal norms and social support on fruit and vegetable intake in low-income communities
To our knowledge, no other studies have examined neighborhood, family, and peer norms and social support simultaneously and in relation to F&V intake. These findings may inform neighborhood interventions and community-level policies to reduce neighborhood disparities in F&V consumption
Tuberculosis screening among HIV-infected patients
National guidelines recommend screening for latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) in all HIV-infected patients. Thus, the objective of this study was to measure protocol adherence to national guidelines regarding LTBI screening for HIV-infected patients entering care at an urban primary care clinic specializing in HIV care, identify clinical and other characteristics associated with adherence, and determine whether transitioning from the tuberculi…
Risk factors for self-report of not receiving an HIV test among adolescents in NYC with a history of sexual intercourse, 2013 YRBS
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has previously recommended that all adolescents undergo HIV testing in the United States (US). Despite these recommendations, national HIV testing among US adolescents has remained low. This study estimated the prevalence of and identified risk factors for not receiving an HIV test among adolescents with a history of sexual intercourse in New York City (NYC), an urban area that has been greatly…
