We analyse material from a study on social inequalities in Canadian youth smoking. Individual interviews were conducted in 2007 and 2008 with tobacco control practitioners specialising in youth smoking prevention in British Columbia and Quebec. We found that the discourse on youth smoking is creating a se…

  • Not the swab!' Young men's experiences with STI testing

    Open Access•Jean Shoveller, Jean A Shoveller et al.•ARTICLE•Sociology of Health & Illness•2010•Cited by: 14•References: 19

In Canada, STI rates are high and rising, especially amongst young men. Meanwhile, the needs of young men regarding STI testing services are poorly understood, as are the socio-cultural and structural factors that influence young men's sexual health-seeking behaviours. To better understand this phenomenon, we draw on interviews with 45 men (ages 15-25) from British Columbia, Canada. Our research reveals how structural forces (e.g. STI testing pro…

We undertook a…

  • Interviewing Young Children

    Open Access•Lori G Irwin, Jerry L Johnson et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Health Research•2005•Cited by: 34•References: 10

Qualitative research studies have demonstrated that very young children can provide important insights into their daily lives and health experiences. Despite the shift to include children's perspectives in research and document principles related to good data collection with children, there has not been a parallel move within the scholarly community to lay bare the practical challenges inherent in conducting interviews with children. In this arti…

  • Historical Perspectives and Comments on the Current Status of Death-Related Literature for Children

    Open Access•Joy Johnson, Joy A Johnson•ARTICLE•OMEGA - Journal of Death and Dying•2004

The children found a dead bird. They wrapped it up. They buried it. They said some words and felt sad. They brought flowers for a few days. Then they forgot. This is the theme of the story in the first modern, in-print, actual hold-in-your-hands children's book about grief in my memory— The Dead Bird, by Margaret Wise Brown. It was dear to me because she wrote the first edition the year I was born, 1938, making me one of the gray-haired grandmoth…
