Factors associated with caregivers’ decisions about when to introduce meat to their infants and toddlers
The 1st Foods Study identified factors associated with caregivers' decisions about when to introduce meat, specifically beef, a food rich in iron and zinc, to their children. Caregivers of 6-24-month-old children across the U.S. completed a survey on dietary habits, attitudes, and complementary food introduction, with a focus on the timing of meat introduction and the factors that influenced it. On average, caregivers introduced meat at ∼9 months…

An epigenome-wide association study of child appetitive traits and DNA methylation
The etiology of childhood appetitive traits is poorly understood. Early-life epigenetic processes may be involved in the developmental programming of appetite regulation in childhood. One such process is DNA methylation (DNAm), whereby a methyl group is added to a specific part of DNA, where a cytosine base is next to a guanine base, a CpG site. We meta-analyzed epigenome-wide association studies (EWASs) of cord blood DNAm and early-childhood app…
Development of a live coding method to assess infant/toddler food acceptance
Validated measures predicting infant consumption of nutrient supplements or fortified foods are essential for the success of nutritional interventions to improve undernutrition. Behavioural coding of food acceptance is one promising approach, though the required time and resources are limiting. The overarching goal of the present study was to adapt a video coding (VC) protocol for use as a live coding (LC) method to assess infant food acceptance …

Evaluation of Preferences Among Students Participating in the US Department of Agriculture Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program
BACKGROUND Improving children's fruit and vegetable (FV) preferences may be important as preferences can predict FV consumption. The purpose of this study was to evaluate FV preferences over time, with repeated experience, as part of the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP). METHODS Fruits (F; N = 28) and vegetables (V; N = 29) were distributed twice a week, over 35 weeks, at a participating FFVP school (N = 236 students, 12 teachers, K‐2nd g…
Moving Together
Background : Establishing physical activity (PA) and motor behaviors in early childhood are important for developing healthy activity behaviors. Parents play a central role in shaping young children's PA and fundamental motor skills (FMS). This qualitative study explored parents' attributes, values, perceptions, and practices related to PA and FMS. Methods: Thirty-one parents (26 mothers) of preschool-aged children participated in semi-structured…
Hungry is not safe
The early care and education (ECE) environment has the potential to affect both children and their families. Food insecurity in ECE and its management may be an important influence. Objectives of this mixed methods study were to (1) elicit prominent themes relating to teacher experiences with food insecurity (in the classroom) through qualitative interviews; (2) translate interview themes into survey items and analyze survey data to explore gener…
A complementary feeding and play intervention improves the home environment and mental development among toddlers in rural India
A cluster randomized trial design was used to test the efficacy of a behaviour change communication intervention on the quality of the home environment and infant development at 15 months of age. Children (n = 600) in rural South India were followed from 3 through 15 months of age. The control group (C group) received the standard of care, the complementary feeding group (CF group) received recommendations on complementary foods and the responsiv…

An Ecocultural Perspective on Eating-Related Routines Among Low-Income Families With Preschool-Aged Children
Eating-related routines, such as regular mealtimes, can protect against obesity. Little is known about eating-related routines among preschoolers or the factors that shape those routines. Ecocultural Theory and qualitative interviews with 30 caregivers of preschoolers in Colorado were used to describe eating-related routines at home and parents' perspectives on the factors that shape routines. Qualitative content analysis was used to analyze and …

Nurse Practitioner and Physician Assistant Satellite Health Centers
A national cohort of 44 rural satellite health centers originally staffed by nurse practitioners (NPs) and physician assistants (PAs) was studied in 1975 and resurveyed in 1979 and in 1984 to examine the viability of this type of health-care delivery organization during a period of significant growth in the nation's physician supply. Twelve of these practices had ceased to function, although eight have been replaced by physician practices. Of the…

The Variability of Young Children's Energy Intake
BACKGROUND: Research conducted in the 1930s showed that, given nutritious choices, children can select an adequate diet without adult supervision. Paradoxically, children grew well and were healthy despite patterns of intake at individual meals that were unpredictable and highly variable. METHODS: To investigate in more detail the energy intake of young children, we measured 24-hour food intake for 15 children, from two to five years of age, on s…

Parents' and Children's Adiposity and Eating Style
Objective. To investigate children's ability to self-regulate energy intake and to determine whether individual differences in the precision of food intake regulation are related to children's anthropometric measures. We collected information pertaining to parental adiposity and dieting practices, as well as mothers' child-feeding practices. Of special interest was the degree of control imposed by mothers over their children's food intake. Our in…

Missed Opportunities for Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Screening Among Women With a History of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus
Objectives. We sought to determine rates and factors associated with screening for type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) in women with a history of gestational diabetes mellitus. Methods. We retrospectively studied women with diagnosed gestational diabetes mellitus who delivered at a university-affiliated hospital (n=570). Data sources included medical and administrative record review. Main outcome measures were the frequency of any type of glucose testi…

Research Opportunities With Curanderos to Address Childhood Overweight in Latino Families
Curanderos are consulted as an adjunct or alternative to biomedical health care in the greater southwest, although the extent of their involvement in obesity prevention and treatment is poorly understood. Seven curanderos participated in audiotaped interviews about their work with families and beliefs about childhood feeding and overweight. Themes reflected curanderos’ beliefs about their practice and childhood obesity. Curanderos approach their …

Attitudes, Concerns, and Likelihood for Action Related to Young Children's Overweight Among Early Childhood Program Staff
For obesity prevention planning in early childhood programs, attitudes and actions of staff related to communicating with parents about young children's eating and weight need to be assessed. Early childhood program teachers (n = 271) working with children aged 3 to 5 years were surveyed by mail. Factor analysis provided patterns of response for multi-item questions. Respondents reported different levels of agreement and comfort regarding communi…
Cluster‐randomized trial on complementary and responsive feeding education to caregivers found improved dietary intake, growth and development among rural Indian toddlers
Inadequate feeding and care may contribute to high rates of stunting and underweight among children in rural families in India. This cluster-randomized trial tested the hypothesis that teaching caregivers appropriate complementary feeding and strategies for how to feed and play responsively through home-visits would increase children's dietary intake, growth and development compared with home-visit-complementary feeding education alone or routine…
