Pace the Person
The history of economic thought deals with theories conceived by thinkers from the past. A scholarly analysis aimed at understanding and evaluating such theories will have to take the entanglement into account that inevitably exists between an author’s work, the person, and the era. But where to draw the line between the relevant and the irrelevant aspects of an author’s persona? And what attitude to adopt so as to enhance understanding and reach…
Adam Smith in a Great Multitude of Contexts
Smith at 300
Selecting a single favorite quote from the work of one’s favorite thinker is quite a challenge. Although I had been immediately enthusiastic about the project when I first heard about it, I struggled with this selection task for weeks. The first reason is that there are just so many quotable passages in Adam Smith’s work that I like very much, and not always on the same grounds. Some quotes I appreciate because they drive home Smith’s broader arg…
“Only the Rags We Had on …”
The Italian prisoner-of-war ( POW ) experience in the Union of South Africa is not well represented in scholarly publications. Research on this topic tends to focus on the general feeling of partnership between captors and captives that came about after 1943, when a new camp commandant was appointed at Zonderwater, the largest POW camp in the Union. There is no doubt that POW s and military authorities shared a mindset cooperation, but it represe…
Volunteer nurses during the First World War
The First World War writings of Betty Freund and Frances Lyndall Schreiner are the only available primary accounts by volunteer nurses from the Union of South Africa who served in the European theatre of war. The reluctance of Union women to volunteer to the British war effort were informed by several historical factors in the decades before the war, yet Betty’s letters and Frances’ narratives reveal similar experiences to those of volunteer nurs…
Foreword to the Translation of Gustav Schmoller’s Reviews of Carl Menger’s “Principles,” “Investigations,” and “Errors”
Battle and Capture in North Africa
Raffaello Cei and Giovanni Palermo both served in the Italian military forces during the Second World War. Following battles against Allied forces in Libya, both men became prisoners of war in the Union of South Africa. While thousands more Italian captives had similar experiences to those of Cei and Palermo, this article looks at the memoirs of these two men with the aim of enriching our understanding of the Italian forces’ range of lived war ex…
History from the inside’ South African Prisoner-of-War Experience in Work Camp 1169, Dresden, 1943–1945
This article narrates the experiences of white English-speaking South African Prisoners-of-War in Dresden Work Camp 1169 during the Second World War. Work Camp 1169 was populated predominantly by South African servicemen, and the availability of their memoirs and diaries, as well as first-hand interviews with some of the former inmates of this camp, provide an opportunity to analyse their experiences in terms of national identity, how well they a…

Changing Attitudes among South African Prisoners of War towards their Italian Captors during World War II, 1942–1943
The Battle of Sidi Rezegh in November 1941 and the fall of Tobruk in June 1942 were disastrous for South Africa. At Sidi Rezegh, the entire 5th South African Infantry Brigade was lost and at Tobruk the following year more than 10 000 South Africans were captured by German forces. As if the shock of becoming prisoners of war (POWs) was not bad enough, most South Africans were horrified when the Germans promptly handed them over to the Italians, wh…
Stalag Happy’
South African prisoner-of-war (POW) experience, a much neglected subject in World War Two texts, is analysed in this article in terms of the experience and use of humour. Experience of humour as a means of coping during captivity reflected captives’ humour identity at the time of the war; however, when interviewed, this coping mechanism is adapted to facilitate dual perspective, one of the many strategies interviewees use to smooth the progress o…
The Scottish Catholic Mission Stations in Bauchi Province, Nigeria
In 1963 the Archbishop of St Andrews and Edinburgh, Gordon Joseph Gray, asked for volunteers to staff a mission station in the Bauchi province in the north of Nigeria. By the end of 1969 the Bauchi experiment was deemed a success; however, the process of establishing the mission was littered with complications. Not only had this station been abandoned by the Society of African Missions since 1957, it was also firmly located in an Islam-dominated …
