  • Using Victimization Reporting Rates to Estimate the Dark Figure of Crime

    Open Access•Andrew Wheeler, Alex R Piquero•ARTICLE•Crime & Delinquency•2025

This paper illustrates how factoring in variables associated with reporting and underreporting can be used to adjust official statistics and generate an estimate of the true prevalence of domestic violence in a community. Combining data from the FBI National Incident Based Reporting System as well as the BJS National Crime Victimization Survey, we show several jurisdictions that have increased aggravated domestic rates in recent NIBRS data. Our u…

  • Testing the Spatial Accuracy of Address-Based Geocoding for Gunshot Locations

Andrew Wheeler, Manne Gerell et al.•ARTICLE•The Professional Geographer•2020

We assess the positional accuracy of address-based geocoding of shooting incidents relative to the location recorded via acoustic gunshot detection technology. This provides a test of the accuracy of typical address-based geocoding methods used in crime analysis, as well as evidence for how much accuracy one gains when using sensors. Examining more than 1,000 shooting incidents in Wilmington, North Carolina, we find that the majority of address-b…

  • Crime control effects of a police substation within a business improvement district

    Open Access•Eric L Piza, Andrew Wheeler et al.•ARTICLE•Criminology & Public Policy•2020•Cited by: 11•References: 7

Research Summary The current study analyzes the crime reduction effect of a police substation operating within a business improvement district in Newark, New Jersey. Synthetic control methods were used to create a control group that was statistically equivalent to the cumulative street units in the target area. Significant reductions of burglary and motor vehicle theft were observed in the target area as compared with a synthetic control area ove…

  • Is the recent increase in national homicide abnormal? Testing the application of fan charts in monitoring national homicide trends over time

This chapter examines the missionary origins, through the agency of the Church Missionary Society, of the Anglican Church in Sudan (the Episcopal Church of the Sudan) and its transformation during its 100-year history, with special reference to the last fifty years. It is a study of the cultural transformation of missionary heritage in the cauldron of war and devastation. In particular the experience of the Dinka and Azande people is reflected up…

  • Visualization techniques for journey to crime flow data

    Andrew Wheeler•ARTICLE•Cartography and Geographic…•2014•Cited by: 2•References: 8

Research applications using journey to crime data present unique challenges for modeling and visualization not encountered with typical data that are only georeferenced at one point in space. The article provides graphical examples on how to visualize flow lines directly, how to effectively aggregate and visualize statistical summaries of distributions of flow lines, and supplemental statistical graphics to visualize flow data.
