Sentence Writing Instruction for Young Struggling Writers
Sentence writing is a critical early writing skill but intervention research in this area has typically lagged behind other aspects of writing, particularly for students with or at-risk for writing difficulties. This multiple baseline across participants single-case study evaluated the effect of a sentence writing intervention on the writing of early elementary grade struggling writers. The three second-grade participants received daily lessons o…
Bias and precision of crowdsourced recreational activity data from Strava
Recreational activity is the single most valuable ecosystem service in many developed countries with a range of benefits for public health. Crowdsourced recreational activity data is increasingly being adopted in management and monitoring of urban landscapes, however inherent biases in the data make it difficult to generalize patterns to the total population. We used in-situ observations and questionnaires to quantify accuracy in Strava data - a …

Analysis of the factors influencing multiple uses of crime guns
Support for the Death Penalty in Cases of Rape and Sexual Assault
Research exploring attitudes toward the death penalty is common in the field of criminal justice. Additionally, a substantial body of literature has examined public perceptions of sex offenders and punishment in the U.S. Unfortunately, few studies have sought to examine perceptions of the death penalty in relation to sexual offending. This study contributes to the literature by examining perceptions of the college students at a mid-sized universi…
Examining College Student Perceptions of Criminal Justice Outcomes Among Persons With Mental Illness
An extensive body of literature has documented punitive responses to mental illness in the United States that have coalesced around arrest and incarceration. Similarly, studies have highlighted the lack of treatment options available to persons with mental illness, as well as the fact the persons with mental illness are particularly susceptible to offering false confessions. Research on perceptions of these realities is, however, comparatively li…
‘A Luminous Translation’
Between 1836 and 1838, a unique display of 175 lithophanes was created at Woburn Abbey by John Russell, 6th Duke of Bedford. Lithophanes (thin porcelain plaques with a relief surface that reveals an image once backlit) were invented around 1826 and primarily reproduced imagery from other sculptures, paintings and prints. Arguing that lithophanes were indicative of English reception of continental imagery, and at the intersection of fine and decor…
Effective Recruitment Strategies for a Sickle Cell Patient Registry Across Sites from the Sickle Cell Disease Implementation Consortium (SCDIC)
Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a genetic disorder predominantly affecting people of African descent and is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. To improve SCD outcomes, the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute funded eight centers to participate in the SCD Implementation Consortium. Sites were required to each recruit 300 individuals with SCD, over 20 months. We aim to describe recruitment strategies and challenges encountered. P…
Relationship changes of military couples during reintegration
This study drew on the emotional cycle of deployment model to track the content, valence, and sequence of relationship changes experienced by returning service members and at-home partners during the transition from deployment to reintegration. In a longitudinal study, 555 military couples (1,100 individuals) wrote 7,387 comments describing changes that had occurred in their relationship during the past month. A content analysis identified 10 sub…
Conducting Psychosocial Intervention Research among Adolescents and Young Adults with Cancer
Efforts to engage AYAs prior to and during studies may help with accrual and retention
A Psychosocial Intervention’s Impact on Quality of Life in AYAs with Cancer
Promoting Resilience in Stress Management (PRISM), a psychosocial intervention for adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with serious illness, enhances resilience resources via four skills-based training sessions. A recent randomized controlled trial showed PRISM improved health-related quality of life (HRQOL) compared to usual care (UC). This post hoc exploratory analysis aimed to better understand the effect of PRISM on HRQOL by describing change…
Teenage recommendations to improve physical activity for their age group
There is a disconnect between what is available and what teenagers want to do. Policy-makers and those involved in physical activity delivery (e.g., schools, local council and local activity providers) should include young people in designing interventions and facilities to ensure they are meeting the needs of this age group and providing the right opportunities for teenagers to be active. That is unstructured, local, low cost, fun, sociable oppo…
Active children through individual vouchers – evaluation (Active)
ISRCTN75594310 (Assigned 06/03/2017)
Enhancing the scoping study methodology
BACKGROUND: Scoping studies are increasingly common for broadly searching the literature on a specific topic, yet researchers lack an agreed-upon definition of and framework for the methodology. In 2005, Arksey and O'Malley offered a methodological framework for conducting scoping studies. In their subsequent work, Levac et al. responded to Arksey and O'Malley's call for advances to their framework. Our paper builds on this collective work to fur…
