Scripting theories focus on the enactment of roles based on structural positions and the social and cultural norms and expectations attached to these positions. These theories are applied in a number of academic disciplines and content areas with prominent variations including sexual and gender scripts. However, across approaches, these theories emphasize that intrapersonal processes, such as the meaning that individuals give to roles, interact w…

    B Olmstead, Spencer B Olmstead et al.•ARTICLE•Sex Education•2020

College provides young adults with ongoing opportunities for relationship and sexual decision-making, but to date only limited attention has been given to college-level sexual health education experiences among first-year students. This study examined the experiences of 46 (31 women, 15 men) first-semester college students who participated in a brief sexual health seminar. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews and subjected to qual…

Romantic relationships among emerging adults (individuals aged 18-25 years) are typically homogenously classified both theoretically and empirically as "exploratory" and "unstable." With a sample of college students ( N = 340), we examined within-group variation among romantic relationships in emerging adulthood using latent class analyses. Four predictor variables indicated four types of romantic relationships among emerging adult college studen…

  • Breaking Up in Emerging Adulthood

    Open Access•Jerika C Norona, B Olmstead et al.•ARTICLE•Emerging Adulthood•2016

Using a unique sample of individuals who have and have not attended college, the present mixed-methods study examined narratives of 113 (47% women) emerging adults’ motivations for initiating breakups with romantic partners. Findings indicated that emerging adults’ motivations for ending their romantic relationships were largely due to their relationships and/or their romantic partners not fulfilling their needs for interdependence. Additionally,…

    Open Access•Patricia N E Roberson, J N Fish et al.•ARTICLE•Emerging Adulthood•2015

Emerging adulthood is a period in the life course that consists of several developmental tasks, including occupational and relationship exploration. Consistent with the developmental tasks of this period, we tested a model of individual development. Using a sample of emerging adults in romantic relationships ( N = 267), we examined the longitudinal association between conflict management and relationship satisfaction and subsequent college adjust…

Nathaniel M Lambert, Sesen Negash et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social and Clinical…•2012

We examined whether the consumption of pornography affects romantic relationships, with the expectation that higher levels of pornography consumption would correspond to weakened commitment in young adult romantic relationships. Study 1 (n = 367) found that higher pornography consumption was related to lower commitment, and Study 2 (n = 34) replicated this finding using observational data. Study 3 (n = 20) participants were randomly assigned to e…
