OBJECTIVE: To determine if a diagnosis of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) was associated with primary care provider-diagnosed physical disease in the first 5 years post deployment. METHODS: An examination of medical records of 4416 veterans of Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom (OEF/OIF) was conducted. This work examines the linkage between the racist songs of 1960s‐era singer Johnny Rebel and the more violently racist music in the 1970s and after. The research included locating and interviewing the elusive Johnny Rebel, securing copies of his lyrics, establishing context with other primary sources and secondary sources, and analyzing the similarities and differences in the messages of the two eras. The ubiquity of the Internet and e‐mail has resulted in a burgeoning interest in their potential for academic research. This paper summarizes the existing practices of Internet research and suggests extensions to them based on the design and administration of a large‐scale, national Web survey.
