Controversial collections
This study discusses the works of art presented by Randlord Max Michaelis and his wife, Lilian, to public institutions in South Africa, particularly in Cape Town. The study notes that benefactions of this kind were unusual for the Randlords– many of whom were, like Michaelis, of German-Jewish origin – and considers the gifts in the context of South African union and the drive to provide a ‘new’ nation with a humanist cultural heritage. But it obs…
Germline Mutations Including the Rare Pathogenic Variant c.3206delC in the ATM Gene Cause Ataxia Teleangiectasia-Associated Primary Central Nervous System Lymphoma
We here report the case of a 2-year-old patient with a primary central nervous system lymphoma of B-cell origin. Due to their past medical history of repeated respiratory tract infections and the marked chemotherapy-associated toxicity and infectious comorbidity, we suspected that the patient also suffered from an inherited immune deficiency disorder. Despite the lack of classical pathognomonic symptoms for ataxia teleangiectasia and missing evid…
Freedom through Art
This article considers educational theory and practice within Michaelis School of Fine Art in an era of extreme political turbulence within South Africa. It argues that the title of director Neville Dubow’s inaugural lecture, “Art and Freedom”, offers a key to the central philosophy of the school. Profoundly influenced by modernist ideals, Dubow and others regarded art as above all a sphere of freedom from workaday social responsibility and confo…
The art of design
This article opens by questioning the narrowness of our modern usage of the term ‘art’, and the consequences for our understanding of the ‘art school’. It takes as its case study the curriculum policy of Cape Town's Michaelis School of Fine Art, from its inception up to 1972. Specifically, it examines the institution's longstanding resistance to the idea of a broad curriculum including a range of design subjects, closely allied to a school of arc…
The attainment of a true eye and a correct hand’
This is a study of the early history of Cape Town's institutional art education, from the establishment of the Roeland Street School of Art in the late nineteenth century to the opening of the Michaelis School of Fine Art in the early twentieth. With debate on the purpose of art education continuing into the twenty-first century this is a history with contemporary relevance. The article contextualises South Africa's art education debates at the t…
Civilising the Cape
Public art galleries in South Africa, in particular the South African National Gallery in Cape Town, owe their establishment to the energetic debates on the role of art and public art galleries that were prevalent in Europe during the 19th century. These debates focused on the ability of art to educate and civilise, and such ideas travelled along imperial networks to the Cape and Australia, where they were negotiated in local contexts. At the Cap…
Artistically or historically important
The reception of the Abe Bailey bequest to South Africa's National Gallery in 1940 is here examined, and in particular the response to its large British sporting art section. It is argued that the general response was poor and that two criticisms in particular prevailed, namely that the genre of sporting art was irrelevant to its South African location and/or that it was typified by work that, qualitatively, did not merit a place in a serious art…
