Global polycrisis
Multiple global crises – including the pandemic, climate change, and Russia's war on Ukraine – have recently linked together in ways that are significant in scope, devastating in effect, but poorly understood. A growing number of scholars and policymakers characterize the situation as a ‘polycrisis’. Yet this neologism remains poorly defined. We provide the concept with a substantive definition, highlight its value-added in comparison to related …

‘Great power rivalry and the securitization of humanity’
The morning before the fire that took his life, Nathan Sears and I presented on a panel about catastrophic and existential risk at the International Studies Association's Annual Convention. We had a good turnout for the 8:15 AM slot on the opening day of the conference, but flight cancellations had, at the last minute, reduced our panel from five presenters to just Nathan and I (alongside our very adaptable discussant, Daniel McCarthy). The unexp…
Global humanitarianism and media culture
There is as yet no collection that examines the longer histories of global humanitarianism and media culture, which would enable readers to consider the various continuities, as well as the differences, characterising the mass media's relationship with international humanitarian crisis and relief. This collection examines this relationship from the 1950s to the present, from Marshall Plan documentaries and the promotion of the Peace Corps in the …
The Zoo and Screen Media
This book is the first critical anthology to examine the controversial history of the zoo by focusing on its close relationship with screen media histories and technologies. Individual chapters address the representation of zoological spaces in classical and contemporary Hollywood cinema, documentary and animation, amateur and avant-garde film, popular television and online media. The Zoo and Screen Media: Images of Exhibition and Encounter provi…

Nature and the Non-human in Andrea Arnold's Wuthering Heights
This article examines the representation of the natural environment and its non-human inhabitants in Andrea Arnold's 2011 film version of Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights. Arnold's ‘post-heritage’ adaptation, I argue, offers a post-humanist distribution of attention that, in its expansive interest in flora and fauna, exceeds the perspectives of its human protagonists, challenges popular ideas about the novel and subverts the conventions of mainst…
High-resolution and Precisely dated record of weathering and hydrological dynamics recorded by manganese and rare-earth elements in a stalagmite from Central China
Manganese (Mn) and rare-earth elements (REEs) in a stalagmite (SJ3) collected from Central China were analyzed, using an ICP-MS method for the precise determination of > 40 trace elements in geological samples by enriched-isotope internal standardization. Unlike speleothem Mn and REEs investigated by cathodoluminescence, which may be incorporated into crystal lattice, the Mn and REEs analyzed in SJ3 should come largely from colloidal and particle…
