  • Revisiting transitory and chronic unemployment in South Africa

Hayley Innez Wakefield, Derek Yu et al.•ARTICLE•Development Southern Africa•2022

This study comprehensively explores the nature and extent of transitory and chronic unemployment using the data from the first four waves of the National Income Dynamics Study (NIDS) conducted in 2008–15. The empirical findings revealed that the transitorily and chronically unemployed individuals shared highly similar characteristics: African female individuals with incomplete secondary education, residing in urban areas of the Eastern Cape, KwaZ…

  • The fuel of unparalleled recovery: Monetary policy in South Africa between 1925 and 1936

    Open Access•Christie Swanepoel, Philip T Fliers•ARTICLE•Economic History of Developing…•2021•References: 8

The newly established South African Reserve Bank (SARB) was tasked to protect the currency by navigating the interwar gold standard, and, from March 1933, maintaining parity with the Pound Sterling. We find that South Africa's exit from gold secured an unparalleled and rapid recovery from the Great Depression. South Africa's exit was accompanied by an inextricable link of the SARB's policy rate to the interest rate set by the Bank of England (BoE…

  • Banking on Family: What Was the Role of Family in the Establishment of Banks in 19th-Century South Africa

Christie Swanepoel, Aaron Graham•ARTICLE•Journal of Southern African Studies•2021

Banks act as intermediaries between those with funds and those who seek funds for economic enterprises. They are a source of credit and capital investment, and their economic value is clear. Less is known about the role of social connections in the establishment of banks. Using data from 19th-century South Africa, we study the establishment of colonial banks and their shareholder profile. We show, using network analysis, that family connections a…

  • Unobtrusively into the ranks of colonial society’: Intergenerational wealth mobility in the Cape Colony over the eighteenth century

Jeanne Cilliers, Johan Fourie et al.•ARTICLE•Economic History of Developing…•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 24

Intergenerational mobility studies are now expanding in three directions – including different regions and time periods, using different outcomes to measure mobility, and investigating the mechanisms that affect mobility. We investigate, for the first time, wealth mobility in the Cape Colony. We compare a number of outcomes, and consider several mechanisms to explain our results. Our data allow us to match at much higher rates than before, and al…

  • Impending Ruin' or 'Remarkable Wealth'? The Role of Private Credit Markets in the 18th-Century Cape Colony

Johan Fourie, Christie Swanepoel•ARTICLE•Journal of Southern African Studies•2018•Cited by: 10

Credit markets develop hand in hand with a market economy. Pre-industrial credit markets, like credit (and capital) markets today, developed in order to smooth consumption, ease trade, and enable long-term investment. Yet in the 18th-century Cape Colony, a Dutch settlement at the southern tip of Africa, commentators of the day were sceptical about what an active credit market could contribute to the economy: for them, borrowing was a sure sign of…
