  • Critical theory of racism, antisemitism, and the demonisation of Israel

    Open Access•Karin Stögner•ARTICLE•European Journal of Social Theory•2025•Cited by: 2•References: 15

This article investigates the complex relationship between racism and antisemitism, advocating for an intersectional approach that highlights their distinct yet interconnected nature. The author critiques the tendency to subsume antisemitism under racism, arguing that such simplification overlooks unique aspects of antisemitism, particularly in contexts where it manifests through anti-Israel resentment. Drawing on a materialist tradition influenc…

  • Walter Benjamin, subjectivity, and gender – the eternal recurrence as a collective dream of modernity

    Karin Stögner•ARTICLE•Journal of Modern Jewish Studies•2020•References: 6

In this article, I wish to elaborate on Benjamin’s reading of so-called “dark thinkers,” i.e. those radical thinkers of the fin de siècle whose cultural criticism willingly or not reinforced and reiterated what they actually criticized. I will refer to Benjamin’s early writings on the German youth movement as well as to his later writings on Baudelaire, Jugendstil, and Lebensphilosophie and thereby focus on motives that connect these diverging pe…

  • International high finance against the nation

    Open Access•Karin Stögner, Karin Bischof•ARTICLE•Journal of Language and Politics•2018•Cited by: 3•References: 10

This article analyses antisemitic elements in the Austrian print media discourse about the 2008–2010 economic crisis. The relevant discursive statements are examined in the light of a theoretical understanding of antisemitic discursive threads as found in the prevalent modes of presentation of the economic and financial crisis in the media. The first main finding is the broad avoidance of openly antisemitic stereotypes, with the exception of the …

  • Gender-specific constructions of the ‘other religion’ in French and Austrian discourse on Turkey’s accession to the European Union

Karin Bischof, Florian Oberhuber et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Language and Politics•2010•Cited by: 1•References: 20

This article presents results from a qualitative analysis of religious and gender-specific ‘othering’ in Austrian and French media discourse on Turkey’s accession to the EU (2004–2006). A typology of arguments justifying inclusion and exclusion of Turkey from Europe or the EU is presented, and gender-specific othering is placed in the context of differing national discourses about Europe and diverging visions of secularisation and citizenship. Se…
