  • No children were harmed’

    Open Access•Maja Bak Herrie, Lotte Philipsen•ARTICLE•Visual Studies•2026•References: 20

This article critically examines the Danish NGO Children’s Wellbeing’s 2023 campaign Stop Violence Against Children, which employed AI-generated portraits of children to visualise the effects of abuse. While the NGO framed the campaign as an ethical alternative to photographing real children – since ‘no children were harmed in the design process’ – we argue that using AI-generated images was not a neutral and innocent solution. By placing this ca…

  • Democratization and generative AI image creation

Open Access•Maja Bak Herrie, nicolas maleve et al.•ARTICLE•AI & Society•2025

The article critically analyzes how contemporary image practices involving generative artificial intelligence are entangled with processes of democratization. We demonstrate and discuss how generative artificial intelligence images raise questions of democratization and citizenship in terms of access, skills, validation, truths, and diversity. First, the article establishes a theoretical framework, which includes theory on democratization and aes…

  • Topological Vision

    Maja Bak Herrie•ARTICLE•Leonardo•2023•References: 3

This article examines the work of the Japanese mathematician and photographer Shigeru Onishi (1928–1994) and his topologically inspired photographic experiments. It considers how his painterly play with emulsion and coloration is a visual exploration of questions of process and continuous transformation and how these experiments can be understood in relation to more general discussions of mathematical and artistic “ways of knowing “ Building on i…

  • Turning biases into hypotheses through method

    Open Access•Simon Aagaard Enni, Maja Bak Herrie•ARTICLE•Big Data & Society•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 44

Machine learning (ML) systems have shown great potential for performing or supporting inferential reasoning through analyzing large data sets, thereby potentially facilitating more informed decision-making. However, a hindrance to such use of ML systems is that the predictive models created through ML are often complex, opaque, and poorly understood, even if the programs “learning” the models are simple, transparent, and well understood. ML model…

  • Qui est Dominique Lambert?”

    Open Access•Maja Bak Herrie•ARTICLE•K&K - Kultur og Klasse•2019

Comparison as a methodological or technical tool to perceive something that was not perceptible beforehand is a complex manoeuvre that gives rise to both potentials and challenges. While emphasising concealed or unseen similarities in artworks or literature, comparison also risks operating on the expense of the potential distance between the two subject matters compared. This article argues that the complex and curious art project Dominique Lambe…

  • Tracing the outlier

    Open Access•Maja Bak Herrie•ARTICLE•Journal of AESTHETICS & CULTURE•2019•References: 2

The relatively new Big Data systems, which operate at different levels, such as modes of monitoring, bulk analysis or techniques for data mining, are increasingly used by corporations and agencies to make sense of massive collections of data, as they promise access to an increasingly traceable and more predictable population. Although these systems have been objects of interest in scientific, economic and socio-political research for some time, t…
