    Open Access•Martin Nguyen•ARTICLE•The Muslim World•2025

In this essay, which was originally a presentation for a presidential plenary on “Constructive Muslim Theology” at the American Academy of Religion, I offer three ways for thinking about the nature of the emerging constructive Muslim discourse: as disciplinary disruption, invitation, and ethical intervention. First, I propose that constructive Muslim theology constitutes a distinct and separate disciplinary undertaking from Islamic Studies. Secon…

This article provides a preliminary study of three previously unstudied Qur'anic works, each of which has been ascribed to an important fifth/eleventh-century member of the Shāfiʿī elite of Nishapur. Previous studies have documented the importance of the city in the formation of the classical tafsīr tradition, with special attention paid to al-Thaʿlabī (d. 427/1035) and his student al-Wāḥidī (d. 468/1076). • Modern Scripturalism and Emergent Theological Trajectories

Martin Nguyen, Martin Nguyen Martin Nguyen•ARTICLE•Journal of Islamic and Muslim…•2016

This article explores how the hermeneutic prioritization of the Qurʾan or “modern scripturalism” has prompted a theological turn in the scholarly study of the Qurʾan within Western academe. The Muslim feminist exegetical discourse serves as a case study. First, I argue that this discourse is resonant with other modern scripturalist movements across the world, such as the Ahl-i-Qurʾan in South Asia. However, because the feminist exegetical discour…

    Martin Nguyen•ARTICLE•Journal of Sufi Studies•2013

The mystic and scholar of Nishapur, Abū l-Qāsim al-Qushayrī, is widely acclaimed for his important treatise on the Sufi Path, al-Risāla , and his Sufi commentary of the Qur’an, Laṭāʾif al-ishārāt . This paper seeks to explore the wide range of interpretations resulting from the ḥurūf al-muqaṭṭaʿa or ‘the disconnected letters’ of the Qur'an. Typically considered a paradigmatic case of the mutashābih in the Qur'an, exegetes have expended much time and energy speculating over the meaning(s) of these enigmatic graphemes. From the earliest exegetes to the later tradition, a chorus of possibilities and theories are encountered. The traditions of …

Environmental exposure to benzene occurs through cigarette smoke, unleaded gasoline and certain types of plastic. Benzene is converted to hematotoxic metabolites by the hepatic phase-I enzyme CYP2E1, and these metabolites are detoxified by the phase-II enzyme NQO1. The genes encoding these enzymes are highly polymorphic and studies of these polymorphisms have shown different pathogenic and prognostic features in various hematological malignancies…
