Judeo-Persian Elegies on the Death of Nāṣir al-Dīn Shāh (r. 1848–1896)
Judeo-Persian manuscripts include many surprising and hitherto unstudied texts. Among them are a number of anonymous elegies on the death of Nāṣir al-Dīn Shāh (r. 1848–1896). This study focuses on the question of their authorship. Based on internal evidence, these poems, replete with textual problems and variants probably caused by oral transmission, were most likely penned by Muslim writers and copied into Judeo-Persian by Jews. For despite this…
Queen Esther in Judeo-Persian Garb
A Shīʿī-Jewish "Debate" (Munāẓara) in the Eighteenth Century
Surviving records of Jewish-Muslim polemical literature originate almost entirely from the Sunni milieu. It is therefore difficult to establish whether polemical exchanges existed in the Shī⊂ī world and how Shī⊂ī arguments against Judaism may have differed from their Sunni counterparts. One record, albeit a «second-hand» one, recounted by some modern editors but based on earlier records, relates a munazara («debate») between the famous Shī⊂ī divi…

The “Iranization” of Biblical Heroes in Judeo‐Persian Epics: Shahin's Ardashīr-nāmah and cEzrā-nāmah
Judeo-Persian literature is one of the most neglected areas of both Jewish and Iranian studies. Although Judeo-Persian texts—New Persian documents in the Hebrew alphabet—date as far back as the second half of the eighth century and constitute, in fact, the first recorded texts in New Persian, they are still largely unexplored for two major reasons. First, most Judeo- Persian texts are available only in manuscript form, and these manuscripts are l…

The Problems of Conversion Among Iranian Jews in the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries
In The Jews of Islam , a recent attempt at evaluating the history of the Jews in Muslim lands, Bernard Lewis makes several references to the fact that Jewish experience in Shi'i lands, particularly in Iran, differed substantially from that of Sunni lands. He points out that Iranian Jews were more persecuted and, on several occasions, were even forced to convert. Yet, aside from mentioning some of the conventional reasons for these differences suc…
