The Story of the Bodmer Papyri
Chiefs
The lowest level of government in sub-Saharan Africa is often a cadre of chiefs who raise taxes, control the judicial system and allocate the most important scarce resource -land.Chiefs, empowered by colonial indirect rule, are often accused of using their power despotically and inhibiting rural development.Yet others view them as traditional representatives of rural people, and survey evidence suggests that they maintain widespread support. We us…

The Discovery of the Nag Hammadi Codices
Fragments from the Cartonnage of 75
In November 1985, the British Museum turned over to me photographs in their files that they had made while conserving the leather binding of 75 for the Bibliothèque Bodmer, which contained fragments of Luke and John not previously published in the editio princeps or otherwise available to scholarship. This article reports on these fragments and includes three plates of the photographs
The French Role in Early Nag Hammadi Studies
The Lilies of the Field
An archaic form of the sayings collection Free from Anxiety like Ravens and Lilies (Q 12.22b–31) is to be found in P. Oxy. 655, Gospel of Thomas Saying 36. T. C. Skeat detected in 1938 a scribal error already present in Q 12.27a (taken over in Matt 6.28b), but still correct in P. Oxy. 655. Part I publishes Skeat's much more recent reconstruction of Saying 36 in P. Oxy. 655. Robinson had already enlarged Skeat's thesis by focusing attention on fou…
A Written Greek Sayings Cluster Older than Q
A scribal error has turned up in Q! This has wide-ranging implications and consequences, to which the present paper is designed to point. If there is a scribal error in Q, then Q was indeed a written Greek text, behind which stood an older written Greek text as Vorlage . This, of course, finally puts to rest already outdated theories of Q being only an Aramaic text, or only a layer of oral tradition rather than a written text. It also has importa…
The Incipit of the Sayings Gospel Q
A Further Fragment of 1QSb

The Nag Hammadi Library in English
First published in 1978, Nag Hammadi was widely acclaimed by critics and scholars alike. Containing many of the writings of the Gnostics since the time of Christ, this was the work that launched modern Gnostic studies and exposed a movement whose teachings are in may ways as relevant today as they were sixteen centuries ago. Although some of the texts had appeared in other translations, the 1978 edition was the first and only translation of these…

The Coptic Gnostic Library Today
In the autumn of 1947 Togo Mina, Director of the Coptic Museum in Old Cairo, showed to Jean Doresse a Coptic manuscript acquired the previous year, which we today call Codex III. Doresse recognized its gnostic character and its importance, and began inquiries as to whether there were other manuscripts in the same find, a find dated ‘about 1945’. Parts of one other codex—today called Codex I—were located in the possession of a Belgian antiquities …
Braaten's Polemic
Effects of task difficulty, race of administrator, and instructions on digit-symbol performance of Negroes
White and Negro experimenters administered digitsymbol tasks of three levels of difficulty to Southern male Negro college students. The task was described as a test of eye-hand coordination. On the most difficult task Ss worked more efficiently when tested by a white than when tested by a Negro. On the two easier codes the skin color of the administrator had no effect. Next, two additional groups of Negro Ss were tested by the same Negro and whit…
Theology as Translation
“Not only do translation and interpretation belong together; they in turn share with language a basic scope. For language itself is the bringing to expression, the exposition, of an understanding. Language is already the beginning of the hermeneutical process. Thus one catches sight of the basic interrelatedness of the problem of the word of God and that of theological hermeneutic. In the broader sense, hermeneutic embraces the movement from the …
