The Text The last sixteen lines of the remnants of the Exagōgē by the playwright Ezechielus depict the appearance of a wondrous and mysterious ζῷον . Since the fifth or sixth century, exegetes, with the singular exception of Israel Abrahams (see below, notes 33 and 56) have identified this wondrous creature with the mythical phoenix.
