The Haihunhou Capsule Biographies of Kongzi and His Disciples
This article introduces the biographical texts accompanying illustrations of Kongzi and several disciples on the wooden frame and cover of a mirror stand excavated in 2015 from the Haihunhou tomb near Nanchang. These texts are analyzed with reference to evolving portrayals of these figures in the Western Han, paying particular attention to parallels with two generically similar chapters in the Shi ji (Records of the Archivist). Of particular inte…

Ethics And Self-Cultivation Practice In Early China
This chapter argues that the vocabulary of ritual performance provides a resource for a test of sincerity of intentions, and that this vocabulary as a result be seen as an integral part of not only early Chinese moral psychology, but also cultivation practice-here defined as practice that alters the actor's dispositions. It treats three texts that focus on qualities of action, showing how cultivation of behaviors and skills was marked by attentio…
The Social and Religious Context of Early Confucian Practice
This chapter begins with an introduction that surveys some of the ways that the Confucian Analects has been read and argues that any attempt to reconstruct an original meaning of the text must locate it in its historical context. It proceeds to examine three quotations from the text—one on the Odes, one on sacrifice, and one on Confucius's relationship with his disciples—with some remarks on the way these quotations have been read. Once these asp…

Material Virtue: Ethics and the Body in Early China
This book reconstructs a neglected episode in the development of Confucianism, one that considerably influenced later Chinese religious thought. Material Virtue examines a set of four through first century B.C.E. Chinese texts that argue virtue has a physical correlate in the body. Based on both transmitted (e.g., the Mengzi or Mencius) and recently excavated (e.g., the Wuxing or Five Kinds of Action) texts, Material Virtue describes how the argu…
Constructing Lineages and Inventing Traditions Through Exemplary Figures in Early China
One major obstacle to understanding the early history of China is the still-prevalent notion that discrete schools of thought contended in the Warring States and Han periods, and that these schools of thought were text-centered. 2 A second is the propensity to conflate quite separate accounts of the same events, institutions, concepts, and taxonomies, for the purpose of devising a neater record. Some historians of early China, recognizing these o…

Confucius and the Analects in the Hàn
Attempting a reading of the Analects informed by a single “historical Confucius” is complicated by the diversity of images of Confucius accepted at different times. Those who think they know Confucius from the biographical details supplied in one or more of the works connected with him, from hagiographical accounts of his exemplary behavior learned at school in Taiwan or Singapore, or from the slightly nonsensical aphorisms attributed to him by p…
