Comparing Multiple Measures of Physical Activity in African-American Adults
OBJECTIVES: We assessed the agreement between self-reported and accelerometer-assessed physical activity (PA) in African-American adults by sex, education, income, and weight status. METHODS: Participants (N = 274) completed the International PA Questionnaire short form (IPAQ-S), Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) PA questions, and PA Questionnaire (PAQ) and a 7-day accelerometer protocol using a waist-worn ActiGraph GT3X accelero…

Risk Factors for 2009 Pandemic Influenza A (H1N1)–Related Hospitalization and Death Among Racial/Ethnic Groups in New Mexico
Objectives. We assessed risk factors for 2009 pandemic influenza A (H1N1)–related hospitalization, mechanical ventilation, and death among New Mexico residents. Methods. We calculated population rate ratios using Poisson regression to analyze risk factors for H1N1-related hospitalization. We performed a cross-sectional analysis of hospitalizations during September 14, 2009 through January 13, 2010, using logistic regression to assess risk factors…

Becoming Intimate With Developmental Knowledge: Pedagogical Explorations With Collective Biography
In this article, we draw on postfoundational frameworks to make visible the subjectification processes by which practitioners simultaneously master and become mastered by developmental theories. We emphasize the implication of the entire minded-body in the processes of the developmental worker formation. We show these processes through empirical investigation with data gathered through collective biography in a child development graduate course i…
Calling all fag hags: From identity politics to identification politics
This paper looks beyond “identity politics” through the figure of the fag hag. In the “identity politics” of the 1980s and 1990s, a person's politics were based solidly in what one identified as: straight woman, gay man, Asian American, and so on. Who one identified with, it was presumed, was—or should be—identical to what one identified as. This kind of identity politics, which was very productive in effecting important social change, has now re…
Are Current Health Behavioral Change Models Helpful in Guiding Prevention of Weight Gain Efforts?
Effective procedures are needed to prevent the substantial increases in adiposity that have been occurring among children and adults. Behavioral change may occur as a result of changes in variables that mediate interventions. These mediating variables have typically come from the theories or models used to understand behavior. Seven categories of theories and models are reviewed to define the concepts and to identify the motivational mechanism(s)…

Action and No Action' - Aboriginal Children's Classification of Films in an Isolated Community
Films are a significant social event in many isolated Aboriginal communities. It has been argued, however, that they are a disruptive influence on the transmission of traditional culture (Shimpo, 1978) and provide inappropriate models for behaviour (Thompson, 1983).This paper examines a small group of Aboriginal children's perception and understanding of films in an isolated, traditionally oriented Aboriginal community. It focuses on the way in w…
