  • Reframing the Yenching Story

    Philip West•ARTICLE•Journal of American-East Asian…•2007•Cited by: 1

One way to revisit and reframe the Yenching story is to imagine with a few bold strokes how the conflicting threads in that story are woven into the ironic twists and turns in twentieth-century Chinese-Western relations. Had it not been for the political collapse of the Qing dynasty in 1911 and the cultural and spiritual vacuum created in its wake, core Chinese faculty at Yenching and many of the Yenching students might never have been attracted …

  • Introduction: Framing the Asia Pacific War with an Even Hand

    Philip West•ARTICLE•Journal of American-East Asian…•2002

The powerful hold the glory of war has on the human imagination is good news for book publishers, filmmakers, and creators of video games—not to mention those invested in military enterprises whose vastness lies almost beyond comprehension. They enjoy economic, political, and cultural markets that seem only to expand with the passing of time. For the purposes of this special issue, that steady and expanding market is bad news because our hope is …

  • Confronting the West: China as David and Goliath in the Korean War

    Philip West•ARTICLE•Journal of American-East Asian…•1993

The use of the biblical reference in the subtitle to this paper is an opportunity to examine some familiar references to the images that often inform both the cliches of popular culture and the assumptions of scholars who study international conflict. China's transformation in the course of the Korean War was indeed one of power, both as image and as reality, in Chinese eyes and much of the rest of the world as well. The question is pinpointing t…

  • The Korean War and the Criteria of Significance in Chinese Popular Culture

    Philip West•ARTICLE•Journal of American-East Asian…•1992•Cited by: 1•References: 1

General interpretations of war, like firsthand accounts of battle, tend to be friendly toward the side of the writer and hostile toward the enemy. There are notable exceptions of course, but the Korean War seems especially vulnerable in this regard. In that conflict, all sides claim victory for themselves, no treaty has been signed, and forty years after the armistice the war's impact throughout the Pacific re gion is palpable.1 Open doors and op…
