Oxford Medieval Texts: Burchard of Mt Sion: Descriptio Terrae Sanctae
Burchard's Descriptio Terrae Sanctae
The manuscripts of the thirteenth-century Descriptio Terrae Sanctae by Burchard of Mount Sion fall into two main groups, offering, respectively, a longer and a shorter text. Earlier scholars have seen the shorter text as the original, of which the longer is an expansion. This study suggests on internal evidence that the longer version is Burchard's original text, and that the shorter is a précis designed for different readers and more devotional …

The Representation of the Gulfs of Suez and Aqaba on Maps from Peutinger to the Survey of Sinai 1868–69
The Red Sea divides at its northern end into two arms, the Gulf of Suez and the Gulf of Aqaba, separated by the triangular promontory of Sinai. The distinctive configuration is instantly recognisable and familiar to every modern student with any serious interest in the near east. The northern bifurcation of the Red Sea has been known to geographers for centuries, though as late as the eighteenth century many maps were published from distinguished…
Nehemiah's Wall
Edomites and Idumaeans
The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between the Iron Age land of Edom and its people, the Edomites, and the Hellenistic period Idumaea and its people, the Idumeans. In the Hebrew writings, and in the records of Israel's contemporaries in Assyria and Babylonia, the name Edom seems to have referred, originally at least, to the territory south-east of the Dead Sea, between the Wadi el-Hesa and the scarp of Ras en-Naqb and perhap…

The Stalemate Position
The psychosurgical operation of stereotactic subcaudate tractotomy can be a highly effective treatment for chronic and intractable affective disorders. We have lately given increasing attention to cases where the depressed mood appears to lift although there is little improvement in social function. In these cases there has been a failure of rehabilitation and the complexities of this process post-operatively are discussed. In addition, relatives…
Psychological aspects of patients having multiple operations for low back pain
The aim of this study was to investigate whether psychological abnormalities were present in patients still complaining of low back pain after more than one operation. It was found that these patients were more psychiatrically disturbed and socially disabled than a matched control group whose back pain responded to one operation. These results suggest that patients requiring assessment for a possible second laminectomy should also be psychiatrica…
