The University of the 1980s: Scattered Thoughts and Reminiscences on Literature
This essay sets out to show what literature meant to college students during the long 1980s. In a time when everyone is talking about the crisis of the humanities in the United States and elsewhere (including China), it becomes somewhat difficult to imagine how those of the author’s generation once embraced literature so passionately and why. The scattered thoughts shared here are intended to invoke in the reader a sense of what literature fever …
Lexically Independent Structural Priming in Second Language Online Sentence Comprehension
This study examined structural priming during online second language (L2) comprehension. In two self-paced reading experiments, 64 intermediate to advanced Chinese learners of English as a foreign language read coordinated noun phrases where the conjuncts had either the same structure or different structures. Experiment 1 showed that the second conjunct was read faster when it had the same structure as the first. This effect occurred for the stru…
The influence of L2 experience on L1 speech perception: Evidence from Mandarin–English bilinguals
Aims: Previous studies have documented that consonants contribute more to lexically related processes than vowels in English, whereas an opposite pattern occurs in Mandarin Chinese processing. The current study aims to examine how the long-term learning of English (L2) influences Mandarin (L1) consonant, vowel, and tone perception in bilingual adults. It also attempts to examine the multi–competence theory at the level of speech perception. Metho…
The Vulnerability to Methamphetamine Dependence and Genetics: A Case-Control Study Focusing on Genetic Polymorphisms at Chromosomal Region 5q31.3
We demonstrated that genetic polymorphism rs14251 located at 5q31.3 was significantly associated with the vulnerability to METH dependence in Han Chinese population
Visual Context Modulates L2 Long‐Term Structural Priming for the Chinese Ba Construction
This study investigates how visual context influences second language (L2) long‐term structural priming for the Chinese ba construction. The experiment consisted of a baseline phase, an exposure phase, an immediate posttest, and a delayed posttest. L2 Chinese learners ( N = 120) were assigned to 1 of 4 groups for the exposure manipulation. The 3 experimental groups were exposed to simultaneous text and audio stimuli using the ba construction, acc…

Lexicalized structural priming in second language online sentence comprehension
Prior work has shown intriguing differences between first language (L1) and second language (L2) comprehension priming of relative clauses. We investigated English reduced relative clause priming in Chinese adult learners of English. Participants of different education levels read sentences in a self-paced, moving window paradigm. Critical sentences had a temporarily ambiguous reduced relative clause. Across lists, critical sentences were rotated…
Truth Becomes Fiction When Fiction Is True: The Story of the Stone and the Visual Culture of the Manchu Court
This paper seeks to interpret The Story of the Stone with reference to the visual culture of the Manchu court. It argues that the Yongzheng reign (1723–1735) inaugurated a new era of visual culture when jia (the unreal or fiction) became itself a productive concept and an indispensable visual device in the illusionistic paintings and interior decoration of the Manchu palaces and gardens. In addressing the intricate interplay and intersections of …
Writing and Speech: Rethinking the Issue of Vernaculars in Early Modern China
When modern Chinese intellectuals embarked on what they claimed to be a vernacularization movement in the second decade of the twentieth century, they took modern Europe as their putative model. They argued that China, in its ongoing transformation from the old empire into a modern nation-state, must undergo a similar shift in which the "dead" classical writing was superseded by a vernacular writing rooted in the "living language." Despite their …
