  • A Diachronic Study of the Hittite Enclitic Particle - ṷa ( r )

Open Access•Kazuhiko Yoshida•ARTICLE•Bulletin of the Society for Near…•2022

This paper is devoted to elucidating the prehistory of the Hittite quotative particle -ṷa(r) from its Proto-Indo-European preform *ṷerh1-t ‘(s)he said’ with special attention to its vocalism. A detailed philological examination of the inner-Hittite data shows that the quotative particle is predominantly employed in word-final position in Old Hittite and later gradually comes to be more frequently used in word-internal position as the number of sl…

  • The Credibility of the Gangoji engi

    Open Access•Kazuhiko Yoshida•ARTICLE•Japanese Journal of Religious…•2015

The garan narabini ruki shizaicho (hereafter engi) contains entries that cannot be accepted as historical facts, entries that do not fit with the historical period for which they are claimed, and items that raise doubts due to internal inconsistencies in the text itself. The text makes a dubious claim of composition on the eleventh day of the second month of Tenpyo 19 (747), but should be considered a forgery from a later period. The document app…

  • The Thematic Vowel - e / a - in Hittite Verbs

Open Access•Kazuhiko Yoshida•ARTICLE•Bulletin of the Society for Near…•2013

It is well known that the Anatolian languages have virtually no attestation of simple thematic verbs in *-e/o-, but thematic verbs with a suffix are abundantly attested in Hittite and the other Anatolian languages. Five types of thematic verbs will be discussed in this paper, i.e. Hittite verbs in -ške/a-, Hittite verbs in -ie/a-, Hittite denominative verbs in -āi-/-ā-, Hittite causatives in -e/a-, and Cuneiform Luvian verbs in -i-/-(i)ia-. Accor…

  • Some Secondary Formed Mediopassives in Hittite

Open Access•Kazuhiko Yoshida•ARTICLE•Bulletin of the Society for Near…•2008

Although the formation of mediopassive verbs in Hittite is mostly regular, some 3 sg. mediopassives display idiosyncratic features which are hard to understand from either synchronical or historical point of view. Synchronically irregular mediopassives such as lagāittari ‘lies, is laid (low)’, išḫuṷaittat ‘scattered’, sii̯ēttari ‘is pressed’ and laḫuttari ‘is poured’ should be regarded as medialized forms constructed with the productive mediopass…

  • Revisioning Religion in Ancient Japan

    Open Access•Kazuhiko Yoshida•ARTICLE•Japanese Journal of Religious…•2003

The study of the history of religion and the history of Buddhism in Japan has recently advanced in great leaps and bounds, with many heretofore unknown facts coming to light. Research on specific topics have gradually accumulated in a variety of fields, and the new perspectives that have emerged have made possible intense debates on how to reevaluate (or "revision")the history of religion and Buddhism in Japan. The field of ancient (kodai) Japane…

  • A Remark on the Consonant System in Proto-Anatolian

Open Access•Kazuhiko Yoshida•ARTICLE•Bulletin of the Society for Near…•1994

One of the most dramatic developments in recent Indo-European studies is the increase of data written in minor Anatolian languages: Palaic, Cuneiform Luvian, Hieroglyphic Luvian, Lycian, Lydian, etc. These languages had little more than names a few decades ago compared with rich documents in Hittite. The increase in the database has, however, led us to a position where all the Indo-European languages of ancient Anatolia will contribute to the rec…
