  • Thirty Years of Economic Reform and Workforce Transformation in China

    Michel Cartier, N Jayaram•ARTICLE•Perspectives chinoises•2011

This study starts with the observation that Chinese publications on the workforce refer to two sets of statistics that diverge on a number of points: annual statistical reports take job status into account, while censuses adopt a double classification under branch and type of work. This study seeks to reconcile the two sets of figures to glean a more realistic image of changes in the situation over the last three decades. It shows that China has …

  • Le 11 septembre vu par la presse chinoise

    Michel Cartier•ARTICLE•Topique•2003

Man and animal in ancient and modern Chinese agriculture - Though ordinarily defined as the association of cereals and of plant fibers for textiles (including silk), Chinese agriculture also reserves an important place for livestock, which is divided among animals for consumption (pigs, sheep and fowl) and work animals (oxen and horses). Contrary to what is usually taken for granted, the passage toward intensive farming has not reduced the import…

Taking as its starting point the huge sample of 260.000 people born in China between the 13th and the 19th century used by Liu Ts'ui-Jung in her récent study on Lineage population, our study aims at assessing the premodern demographic evolution of China. Inasmuch the method of family reconstruction actually limited the scope of the her book, Liu Ts'ui-Jung was not able to go beyond the description of a specific demographic regime defined by three…

    Open Access•Michel Cartier•ARTICLE•Espace populations sociétés•1995

Population Growth and Distribution in China. In opposition with the majority of developing countries, China went through a steady population growth for several centuries, the country finally entering the phase of demographic transition less than fifty years ago. The author of this article attemps to show that the most obvious result of such an evolution has been the gradual filling up of the Chinese agricultural space by a dense peasant populatio…

    Open Access•Michel Cartier•ARTICLE•Journal of Family History•1995•Cited by: 4•References: 6

Recent evolution of the Chinese family as revealed through the returns of the last censuses shows a diminution in size coupled with a stability of the structures, with approximately one-quarter of the population living in the frame of three-generation households. Fluctuations in size have been mainly induced by variations in the age distribution following the process of the demographic transition. The article discusses the impact of various demog…

    Open Access•Michel Cartier•ARTICLE•Annales Histoire Sciences Sociales•1981•Cited by: 1•References: 1

    Open Access•Michel Cartier•ARTICLE•Annales Histoire Sciences Sociales•1970
