Knowledge as Persuasion in the Oratory of an Almohad Qadi
This article analyses the Almohad judge Ibn ʿUmar al-Sulamī al-Aġmātī’s (d. 603/1206 or 1207) oration (ḫuṭba) against the philosophers. In the absence of any contemporaneous descriptions of the circumstances in which al-Sulamī composed and presumably delivered this ḫuṭba, I evaluate the historiographic evidence that contextualizes the sermon as part of what the Moroccan historian Muḥammad Ibn Šarīfa dubbed the “propaganda campaign” in which, at t…

Representations of Hegemonic Masculinities in Medieval Leonese-Castilian and Almohad Chronicles
This article compares two twelfth-century Iberian dynastic chronicles to show the ways in which Muslim and Christian hegemonic masculinities were textually constructed as relational to high-status males of the same and rival religious faiths. I explore the roles religion plays in shaping the concept of hegemonic masculinity, in constituting the royal protagonist’s elevated political and masculine status, and in positioning allies and foes in rela…
Christian, Jewish, and Muslim Preaching in the Mediterranean and Europe
"This volume explores the sermons and activities of Christian, Jewish, and Muslim preachers who shaped ideas about religious and gendered identities and alterity throughout the Mediterranean and northern Europe. Preachers of all three traditions played a decisive role in defining the religious identities of their communities, often in response to negative images projected onto religious others. The studies cover a broad spectrum of premodern Euro…
Mystical Encounters
Ibn al-Khaṭīb’s engagement with Sufism has received less attention among scholars than other aspects of his political and literary career. The existing research has focused primarily on the debate concerning the sincerity of his commitment to Sufism. This article proposes to locate Ibn al-Khaṭīb’s attitude toward Sufism and the Sufis of fourteenth-century Nasrid Granada by analyzing some of the notices he dedicated to Sufis in his biographical di…
The Preaching of the Almohads
One of the lacunas in Almohad scholarship is the role that preaching played in disseminating Almohad ideology throughout the empire and its contributions to fostering unity between Muslim Iberia and the Maghrib. This article analyzes the distinctive rhetorical, ritual, and juridical features of the Almohad sermon ( khuṭba ) and explores how the Almohads deployed religious preaching and ceremonial oratory to pursue their religio-political objectiv…
The Power of Oratory in the Medieval Muslim World
Oratory and sermons had a fixed place in the religious and civic rituals of pre-modern Muslim societies and were indispensable for transmitting religious knowledge, legitimising or challenging rulers and inculcating the moral values associated with being part of the Muslim community. While there has been abundant scholarship on medieval Christian and Jewish preaching, Linda G. Jones's book is the first to consider the significance of the traditio…
Prophetic Performances
This volume of essays concentrates on the effects of preaching in late medieval and early modern Europe, particularly through the concept of charisma, a term introduced into the discussion of religion and politics by Max Weber. Used by Weber, the term indicates the power of a person to move others to action, to animate and mobilize them. The late medieval and early modern periods witnessed the emergence of preachers who became powerful public fig…
The Garden and the Fire
Witnesses of God
