India as Theory
This collaborative essay considers how India’s multiple, time-deep, and sophisticated literary cultures can contribute to a canon of global literary theory. Reconstructing premodern Indian literary theories of allusion and translation, we seek to bring new voices into the global discussion. The first part explores a theory of allusion in conversation with a work of Sanskrit literary theory, Ruyyaka’s Treasure of Ornaments. In the second part, the…

Reading Jalhaṇa Reading Bilhaṇa
The Sūktimuktāvalī, an anthology compiled in 1258 CE, is by far the most important source of testimonia for Bilhaṇa's biographical mahākāvya, the Vikramāṅkadevacarita, composed ca. 1085. While the anthology's value for the primary textual criticism of the kāvya is limited, its value for its interpretation is considerable: Bilhaṇa is the anthology's most frequently cited poet, and its selection of his verses amounts to a reading of the poem as a w…
Trouble at the “Crossroads”
Bilingual discourse and cross-cultural fertilisation
Literary register and historical consciousness in Kalhaṇa
This article is self-consciously framed as a hypothesis, a suggestion of how we might go about the work of understanding Kalhaṇa’s Rājataraṅgiṇī (RT), as well as certain other works of Kashmirian Sanskrit. I propose that Kalhaṇa’s poem be understood as the crowning achievement of a local literary form which I term the Kashmirian ślokakathā . After a brief review of the style’s major diagnostic features, I analyse a passage drawn from the earliest…
Bhoja's Alternate Universe
Towards the end of the eleventh chapter of the Śṛṅgāraprakāśa , there is an aside in gāthā s that surveys the genres that king Bhoja accepts as constituting the complete range of literary form. The passage is long, 14 pages in Raghavan's edition, and gives us some idea of the unusual flavour of the Śṛṅgāraprakāśa as a whole. Much of it is taken over en bloc from the Nāṭyaśāstra 's eighteenth adhyāya , although with considerable reorganisation and…

Scribe and script in the Cālukya West Deccan
This article concentrates on the production of copper plate donative charters by the chancellery of the later Western Cālukyas in what is now northern Karnataka. In analysing this small corpus of eight documents, I try to capture how this form of public document can be contextualised in multiple ways, in order to restore something of the pragmatic world of the emergence and use of this particular set of epigraphic materials. Over the period studi…
