  • Concerning Ben Sira and Demotic Wisdom: A Response to Matthew J. Goff

Jack T Sanders, Jack Sanders•ARTICLE•Journal for the Study of Judaism•2007

In a recent issue of this journal M. J. Goff took issue with my 1983 study Ben Sira and Demotic Wisdom and sought to show that some of my conclusions there were unwarranted. His procedure, however, was different from mine, in that he analyzed similarities of themes in Ben Sira and in the Demotic Wisdom Book rather than similarities of vocabulary and construction, as I had done. Unfortunately, he also ignored some of the more striking evidence tha…

  • Whence the First Millennium? The Sources behind Revelation 20

    Open Access•Jack T Sanders•ARTICLE•New Testament Studies•2004

Many scholars in a former generation thought that Zoroastrian ideas had influenced the concept and structure of the millennium in Rev 20. More recently, however, nearly all scholars who deal with Revelation think rather that Ps 90.4 was responsible for the formulation in Rev 20. A careful review of both Jewish and Zoroastrian texts that bear on the issue, however, shows that, while absolute proof may be lacking, we should still give very serious …

Jack T Sanders•ARTICLE•Journal for the Study of Judaism•2001•Cited by: 1

  • Did Early Christianity Succeed Because of Jewish Conversions

    Open Access•Jack T Sanders•ARTICLE•Social Compass•1999

Responding to Rodney Stark's recent work on societal factors leading to the success of early Christianity, the author challenges Stark's finding of a majority Jewish component in early Christianity. First, Sanders argues that Hellenized Jews in the Roman period were not comparable to assimilationist Jews in the 19th and 20th centuries: most in reality remained firmly oriented to their religious culture. Second, he questions Stark's proposal that …

  • The Criterion of Coherence and the Randomness of Charisma: Poring Through Some Aporias in The Jesus Tradition

    Open Access•Jack T Sanders•ARTICLE•New Testament Studies•1998

Many scholars employ a different kind of criterion of coherence from the standard, i.e., the criterion that Jesus’ authentic sayings hold together in a coherent whole; yet Jesus scholars differ regarding the nature of this coherence. When we then understand that Jesus was a charismatic leader of a new religious movement, and when we examine how such persons in general behave, we see the importance of randomness for charismatic leadership, and we …

  • Christians and Jews in the Roman Empire: A Conversation with Rodney Stark

    Jack T Sanders•ARTICLE•Sociological Analysis•1992•Cited by: 1

Rodney Stark's article on the relation of early Christianity to cities produces impressive statistical results showing that population had some relation to where Christianity spread, but that distance from Jerusalem and Romanization were strong negative factors, and that there was a high correlation between presence of a synagogue in a city and the establishment of Christianity there. The statistical base of that study needs to be corrected, and …

  • Who Is a Jew and Who Is a Gentile in the Book of Acts

    Open Access•Jack T Sanders•ARTICLE•New Testament Studies•1991

It has been now nearly a quarter century since W. C. van Unnik labelled the two-volume work to which we refer in abbreviated form as Luke–Acts as ‘a storm center in contemporary scholarship’. He referred in particular to the issues of redaction criticism, of the purpose of Acts, of the theological approach in Luke–Acts to the problem of the delay of the parousia, of the author's treatment of Paul, of the character and function of the speeches in …
