  • Prospects and possibilities for interfaith environmentalism

    Open Access•Robert Mckim•ARTICLE•Religious Studies•2024

This article probes some philosophical issues that pertain to interfaith environmental collaboration. I distinguish some forms of interfaith environmentalism, starting with a form that is relatively easy for religious communities to pursue and that appears straightforward and easy to understand. Then I propose that even this easily pursued type of collaboration has interesting components that may not be obvious at first glance, including various …

  • Faith in God and Environmental Engagement

Robert Mckim•ARTICLE•American Journal of Theology &…•2021

In her book Natural Saints: How People of Faith Are Working to Save God's Earth Mallory McDuff quotes a member of the religious environmental group Georgia Interfaith Power and Light as saying that: the science of climate change and the environmental crisis is the wake-up call. But faith in God provides the hope that gets us out of bed to do something about it. Faith gives us the hope, joy, and possibility of triumph to “let not our hearts be tro…

  • Laudato Si’ and the Environment

Robert Mckim•EDITOR•BOOK•Laudato Si' and the Environment•2019

"This volume is a response to the Pope's Laudato Si', giving an interdisciplinary overview of its impact on the environmental concerns of Catholics as well as other religious groups. Published in 2015, it is often seen as an "environmental" encyclical and in it the Pope urges us to face up to the crisis of climate change. He argues that all of us should prioritise taking better care of the Earth, our common home, while also attending to the pligh…

  • The Future of Philosophy of Religion, the Future of the Study of Religion, and (Even) the Future of Religion

    Robert Mckim•BOOK•Renewing Philosophy of Religion•2017

This chapter makes a three-part case for a more ambitious, more comprehensive, and richer philosophy of religion than that with which we are currently familiar, at least in the English-speaking world. First, it is unsatisfactory for philosophy of religion to consist mostly in philosophical reflection about issues pertaining to a single religion, or to a single religion and its close relatives. Second, many scholars of religion, irrespective of th…

  • The Environmental Relevance of the Idea of a Relational Self

Robert Mckim•ARTICLE•Journal for the Study of Religion…•2017

Some scholars propose that the idea of the self as relational is environmentally relevant. I question the meaning, coherence, plausibility, and environmental relevance of the idea of a relational self. However, I also contend that the profoundly important purposes of those who consider this idea about the metaphysics of the self to be environmentally relevant may be achieved by a more commonsensical analysis of the self that has no particular met…

  • Religious Perspectives on Religious Diversity

    Robert Mckim•BOOK•Religious Perspectives on…•2016

Religious Perspectives on Religious Diversity addresses fundamental and controversial questions raised by religious diversity. What are members of religious traditions to say about outsiders, their views, and their salvific status? And what are they to say about the religions of outsiders – about, say, whether those religions are inspired or salvifically effective or worthwhile or legitimate? Discussion of some Muslim, Christian, and Jewish persp…

  • Patient-Provider Rapport in the Health Care of People Who Inject Drugs

    Open Access•Ginetta Salvalaggio, Robert Mckim et al.•ARTICLE•SAGE Open•2013•Cited by: 1•References: 31

Little research has described determinants and consequences of patient-provider rapport among people who inject drugs (PWIDs). This mixed-method study (a) qualitatively described facilitators, barriers, and consequences to rapport development between PWIDs and their health care providers and (b) quantitatively tested the hypothesis that quality of rapport is associated with positive patterns of service use. Two exploratory focus groups with PWIDs…

  • On religious ambiguity

    Open Access•Robert Mckim•ARTICLE•Religious Studies•2008

I examine, and defend, the idea that human experience is religiously ambiguous. Necessary conditions for there to be ambiguity of any sort are presented. The sort of ambiguity that (it is later argued) is exhibited in the area of religion is clarified in a series of stages. Then the case is made for the application of this notion of ambiguity in the case of religion

  • Evaluation of Client Satisfaction in a Community Health Centre

Vickie Boechler, Anne Neufeld et al.•ARTICLE•Canadian Journal of Program…•2002

Community health centres (CHCs) have emerged as sites in which services based on a primary health care (PHC) model are delivered. In the evaluation of the newly established Northeast CHC in Edmonton, Alberta, client satisfaction was a significant part of the evaluation component on community participation. A reliable and valid tool was sought to measure the dimensions of client satisfaction appropriate for a CHC that is based on the principles of…

  • Religious Diversity

    Robert Mckim•CHAPTER•Religious Ambiguity and Religious…•2001

Religious traditions disagree deeply about religious matters. And in many religious traditions there are to be found wise people who think carefully and judiciously, who are intelligent, clever, honest, reflective, serious, and so on. This is a fact of religious disagreement. This disagreement is in fact part of the evidence for the religious ambiguity of the world. In addition, disagreement about an issue or area of inquiry provides reason to th…

  • Religious Ambiguity and Religious Diversity

    Robert Mckim•BOOK•Religious Ambiguity and Religious…•2001

The religious ambiguity of the world has many aspects, one of which is the hiddenness of God. Theists have proposed a number of explanations of God's hiddenness. Some putative explanations contend that the advantages of God's hiddenness (“goods of mystery”) outweigh whatever benefits would result if God's existence and nature were clear to us (“goods of clarity”). Goods of mystery that have received a lot of discussion include human moral autonom…

  • The morality of nationalism

Robert Mckim, Jeff Mcmahan•EDITOR•BOOK•The morality of nationalism•1997

Nationalism is one of the most intractable political problems in the world today. In this collection of essays, some of today's most eminent political scientists and philosophers address the ethics of nationalism. Rather than focusing on descriptive and prescriptive themes or policy issues, this volume focuses on the deeper moral issues that must be addressed if a policy prescription is to be well grounded. The contributors include Charles Taylor…

  • The Hiddenness of God

    Open Access•Robert Mckim•ARTICLE•Religious Studies•1990

Neither the existence of God nor the nature of God is apparent or obvious. If God exists, why is it not entirely clear to everyone that this is so? How can theists explain God's hiddenness, and how plausible are their explanations? God, if God exists, is an omnipotent, morally good, omnipresent being, than whom none greater can be conceived. Surely it is well within the abilities of God to let God's existence and nature be known to us. Why isn't …
