  • John Wyclif on Body and Mind

Emily Michael•ARTICLE•Journal of the History of Ideas•2003

The evangelical doctor, John Wyclif (1320-1384), a prominent, if controversial, Oxford master, is commonly identified as the evening star of scholasticism and the morning star of the Reformation. That Wyclif was a bold thinker is reflected in his philosophical system and in his theological and political views. Our interest here is in Wyclif's now little known natural philosophy. What I wish to examine is whether he can, with any justice, be dubbe…

  • Daniel Sennert On Matter and Form: At the Juncture of the Old and the New1

    Emily Michael•ARTICLE•Early Science and Medicine•1997

Daniel Sennert (1572-1637), a prominent physician and a prolific and influential writer, was both an atomist and an Aristotelian. He was influenced by a distinctive and now little known Aristotelian approach to matter and form, and this promoted his development over time of a hierarchical account of atoms, with elementary atoms and grades of molecules. The first section provides a study of Sennert's Aristotelian foundation. The final two sections…

  • Gassendi's modified Epicureanism and British moral philosophy

  • The Theory of Ideas in Gassendi and Locke

Fred S Michael, Emily Michael•ARTICLE•Journal of the History of Ideas•1990•Cited by: 3

There has recently been controversy over whether Gassendi should be considered the source of modem empiricism.1 Present day interest in Gassendi's influence on Locke perhaps dates from the observation of R. I. Aaron in his book on Locke, first published in 1937, that influence of Gassendi upon Locke, and indeed, upon English thought in general at this period has been strangely neglected.2 David Fate Norton in his paper Myth of 'British Empiricism…
