  • The Journal’s Homecoming

    Louis Rose•ARTICLE•American imago•2018

The Journal’s Homecoming Louis Rose American Imago is returning home. With our next issue, Murray Schwartz, with the support of the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute, will assume the editorship of the journal in the city to which Hanns Sachs brought Imago from Vienna in 1939. The journal’s homecoming is noteworthy, and it has been a great honor and pleasure to participate in it. I look forward to seeing American Imago continue to develo…

    Louis Rose•BOOK•Psychology, art, and antifascism•2016

The book presents a vivid portrait of two remarkable twentieth-century thinkers and their landmark collaboration on the use and abuse of caricature and propaganda in the modern world. In 1934, Viennese art historian and psychoanalyst Ernst Kris invited his mentee E.H. Gombrich to collaborate on a project that had implications for psychology and neuroscience, and foreshadowed their contributions to the Allied war effort. Their subject: caricature …

Gombrich to collaborate on a project that had implications for psychology and neuroscience, and foreshadowed their contributions to the Allied war effort. • War Work, 1941–45

    Louis Rose, L R F Rose•CHAPTER•Psychology, art, and antifascism•2016

This chapter analyzes how several months after the Allied landings in Europe, John Marshall undertook a fact-finding mission to Britain to explore the role that the Rockefeller Foundation could play in postwar reconstruction. At Kris' urging, he arranged to meet with Gombrich. Kris pressed upon Gombrich the importance of Marshall as a professional contact and awaited Gombrich's account of their meeting. During their conversation, Marshall posed a…

  • Introduction: When Matter Speaks

    Louis Rose, L R F Rose•ARTICLE•American imago•2013

Introduction:When Matter Speaks Louis Rose For decades, psychoanalysts and neuroscientists have asked similar, fundamental questions: What internal pathways and processes determine our perceptions of self, others, and the world? What mental operations lead us from observing the world to re-envisioning it? How do our visualizations of the world compel and inspire us to engage—or re-engage—with it? In recent years, such questions have guided and en…

  • Imago/American Imago: 1912–2012 Preface

    Louis Rose•ARTICLE•American imago•2012

Imago/American Imago: 1912–2012 Preface Louis Rose The first issue of Imago, under the editorial direction of Sigmund Freud and co-edited by Otto Rank and Hanns Sachs, appeared in Vienna in March 1912. The journal continued to appear during the First World War and remained active until 1938, when the Anschluss between Nazi Germany and Austria made it impossible to go further as a Viennese publication. In that same year, Sachs recommended to Freud…

    Louis Rose•ARTICLE•American imago•2011

Introduction Carl E. Schorske as Historian, Writer, and Political and Psychoanalytic Thinker Louis Rose As Sigmund Freud concisely articulated in The Interpretation of Dreams, psychoanalysis differentiates itself from other psychologies in the vast field of research into the human mind by its central focus on the over-determination of meaning. The person honored in this issue of American Imago has reconceived, expanded, and deepened that essentia…

    Louis Rose•ARTICLE•American imago•2003

First I want to thank Peter Rudnytsky, Jack Spector, and Gilbert Rose for making the book into an opportunity for dialogue. It is welcome to respond to the commentators. In concluding his discussion of the followers of Warburg and Freud, Jack Spector succinctly and cogently evaluates the ability of the classical tradition to comprehend contemporary political and cultural upheavals. As his essay explains, the possible limitations on that ability c…

  • The Political Economy of Urban Land Reform in Hawaii

    Open Access•Sumner J La Croix, James Mak et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Studies•1995•Cited by: 1•References: 8

In the mid 1960s there were about 22 000 single-family leasehold homes in Honolulu. Dissatisfaction with leasehold led to reform legislation in 1967, allowing lessees to buy leased land. By 1991 less than 5000 lessees remained. This paper examines why landowners elected to lease rather than sell land and attributes the rise of leasehold to legal constraints on land sales by large estates, duties of estate trustees and the federal tax code. Ideolo…

  • The Moral Journey of the First Viennese Psychoanalysts

    Louis Rose•ARTICLE•The Psychoanalytic Quarterly•1992•Cited by: 2•References: 2

By exploring the cultural concerns of Freud's first Viennese disciples, this article explains how these concerns helped inspire both intellectual conviction in Freudianism and inner commitment to the psychoanalytic movement. In this way, it illuminates an important underlying identity between medical practitioners and laypersons within Freud's circle. At the same time, it brings to light the tension between values and science in Viennese psychoan…

The price of land in Honolulu is higher than in any other major US urban area. This paper examines several determinants of the supply and demand for land and discusses their likely influence on Honolulu's land price. It utilises comparisons between demand and supply conditions in Honolulu and in the forty most populous US urban areas to ascertain the strength of the respective determinants. The regression results confirm that natural and institut…
