Die Psychologie des Aristoteles, insbesondere seine Lehre vom ΝΟΥΣ ΠΟΙΗΤΙΚΟΣ
Brentano’s 1867 habilitation thesis on the Aristotle’s view of psychology is of fundamental significance in two ways: First, it had a considerable influence on Aristotle studies in that it sparked a vigorous debate with Eduard Zeller. Second, it drew particular attention within Brentano studies, as Brentano used it to draw out certain aspects of Aristotelian psychology.
The Philosophy of Brentano
This volume, originating from the centennial Second International Conference Graz 1977–2017 on Franz Brentano’s philosophy, collects eighteen essays written by nineteen distinguished specialists covering the main areas of Brentano’s philosophy: his epistemology, ontology, ethics, and logic, and his contributions to psychology and philosophy of mind. Its goal is to explore the significance and impact of Brentano’s thought, to promote a deepening o…
Psychology of eyewitness testimony in Germany in the 20th century
The history of the psychology of eyewitness testimony cannot be adequately understood without taking the respective legal systems, that is inquisitorial versus adversarial system, into account. Across all periods, questions regarding the accuracy of testimony, its suggestibility, and intentional distortions in false accusations become apparent. We describe the history of the experimental psychology of testimony in Germany from the beginning of th…

Vittorio Benussi, hypnosuggestive methods, and emotional functional autonomy
This article reconstructs Vittorio Benussi's (1878-1927) research on autonomia funzionale emotiva [emotional functional autonomy], carried out in Padua between 1920 and 1927. Its aim is to demonstrate that Benussi believed-against the intellectualist mainstream of the psychology of his time and even against the Brentanian-Meinongian tradition in which he was educated-in the fundamental independence of emotions from the cognitive functions that us…
Early alternative derivations of Fechner's law
Historians of psychology, notably Boring, fostered Fechner's idea that Weber's law is the indispensable basis for the derivation of the logarithmic psychophysical law. However, it is shown here that Bernoulli in 1738 and Thurstone in 1931 derived the logarithmic law using principles other than Weber's law and that Fechner and Thurstone based their derivations on the principles originally employed by Bernoulli. It is concluded that awareness of re…
Seiendes, Bewußtsein, Intentionalität
Was ist Seiendes? Was heißt Bewusstsein?
