  • Reduplicative identity driven by surface correspondence

    Open Access•Yifan Yang•ARTICLE•Phonology•2026

This article focusses on the identity effect found in reduplication and how it can be accounted for in a formal theory. Specifically, this article demonstrates that the diminutive reduplication in Huozhou Chinese offers new empirical evidence supporting a correspondence-based analysis of reduplication. The reduplicative patterns can be understood as an effect of Agreement by Correspondence (ABC), thereby confirming a previously overlooked predict…

  • Learning from the Input: A Corpus-Based Investigation of Chinese Classifiers in Children’s Books and Child-Directed Speech

Open Access•Jinyu Shi, Yaling Hsiao et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Child Language•2026

In Mandarin Chinese, numeral classifiers form a grammatical category that is syntactically obligatory when a noun is modified by a numeral or a demonstrative. The appropriate choice of a classifier is associated with the semantic properties of its corresponding noun and is context dependent. Experience with language is needed to learn these patterns, but little is known about how classifiers are structured in children's language environments. We …

  • Repertoires of Access: Corporate–Community Engagement in Chinese Bauxite Mining in Guinea

    Open Access•Yifan Yang•ARTICLE•Africa Spectrum•2026

Using a repertoire lens, this article examines business–community encounters around two large-scale greenfield projects operated by Chinese state-owned enterprises in Guinea's bauxite frontier. The heuristic highlights how tactics linked to different governance traditions re-emerge within micro-ecologies of meaning, objects, and practices. Drawing on five months of fieldwork in Guinea, I trace the dialogical interplay between: (a) evolving corpor…

  • Hyperlocal disaster damage assessment using bi-temporal street-view imagery and pre-trained vision models

Open Access•Yifan Yang, Lei Zou et al.•ARTICLE•Computers Environment and Urban…•2025•References: 17

Street-view images offer unique advantages for disaster damage estimation as they capture impacts from a visual perspective and provide detailed, on-the-ground insights. Despite several investigations attempting to analyze street-view images for damage estimation, they mainly focus on using post-disaster images. The potential of time-series street-view images remains underexplored. Pre-disaster images provide valuable benchmarks for accurate dama…

In essence, the act of naming and shaming online embodies a desire for the redistribution of benefits, an expectation …

  • Floating mora affixation in Huozhou diminutive subtraction

    Open Access•Yifan Yang•ARTICLE•Glossa a journal of general…•2024

This paper argues for an item-and-arrangement approach by demonstrating that the diminutive form in Huozhou Chinese results from the affixation of a floating mora. Diminutives in Huozhou Chinese are formed by deleting the final non-vocalic segment of a syllable, along with some subsegmental changes (e.g., [phɑŋ35] ‘plate’, [phaː35] ‘plate.DIM’). This paper provides a detailed description of these patterns and proposes that the underlying represen…

  • Temporal Coordination and Markedness in Moenat Ladin Consonant Clusters

Open Access•Rachel Walker, Yifan Yang•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Annual…•2023

In this paper we examine the phonotactics of consonant clusters in Moenat Ladin in terms of their markedness and temporal coordination. Moenat Ladin word-initial clusters include sibilant-stop (SC), stop-/r/ (Cr), stop-/l/ (Cl), and sibilant-stop-/r/ (SCr). However, despite SC and Cl sequences being well-formed in Moenat, sibilant-stop-/l/ (SCl) clusters are almost entirely unattested. We hypothesize that the rarity of SCl clusters owes to a cumu…
