Cross-cohort insights into the association of handgrip strength transitions and burdens with cardiovascular disease risk
Background: Previous studies established handgrip strength (HGS) as a potential risk factor for cardiovascular diseases (CVD). However, existing studies focused exclusively on baseline HGS and neglected longitudinal changes in HGS during follow-up. Thus, our aim was to investigate the associations of transitions and dynamic burdens of HGS with incident CVD risk. Methods: We analyzed data from the UK Biobank (UKB), the China Health and Retirement …

Factors influencing HPV vaccination intention and uptake behaviors among medical students based on the health belief model and vaccine hesitancy theory: A cross-sectional study
Background HPV infection is the leading cause of cervical cancer. HPV vaccination coverage among young people in China remains low. Medical students, as a high-risk group and future health educators, are critical for cervical cancer control. Methods A questionnaire survey was conducted among 1,244 medical students from April to May 2026. Data were analyzed using SPSS 26.0, including t -test, correlation, regression, and serial mediation analysis …
Unravelling the role of inflammatory markers in coronary artery disease risk via association, mediation and prediction analyses
Background: Systemic inflammation plays a critical role in coronary artery disease (CAD), yet comprehensive profiling of inflammatory markers and their integration into predictive models remain incompletely characterised. We here sought to identify key CAD-related inflammation markers and construct an integrated inflammatory risk score (IRS) to enhance conventional cardiovascular risk prediction. Methods: Associations between 18 complete blood co…
Association analysis of suicide risk assessed with Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interviews’ Suicidality Module in adolescents with non suicidal self injury disorder
The results of statistical analysis suggest that severe depressive symptoms are related to the high risk of suicide (based on MINISM) in adolescents with NSSI-D statistical significantly, and anxiety symptoms and low self-concept are associated with depressive symptoms in NSSI-D adolescents. Interventions targeting anxiety symptoms in adolescents with NSSI-D may help reduce their suicide risk
The survival of murine hepatitis virus (a surrogate of Sars-CoV-2) on conventional packaging materials under cold chain conditions
Introduction: The cold chain conditions have been suggested to facilitate long-distance transmission of SARS-CoV-2, but it is unclear how viable the virus is on cold chain packaging materials. Methods: This study used the MHV-JHM strain of murine hepatitis virus as a model organism to investigate the viability of SARS-CoV-2 on foam, plastic, cardboard, and wood sheets at different temperatures (-40°C, -20°C, and 4°C). In addition, the ability of …

Immigrant parents and children navigating two languages: A scoping review
Upon initiating school, immigrant children begin to lose much of their heritage language (HL) abilities, resulting in the erosion of a common shared language with their parents. Although communication is fundamental to positive parent–child relationships, research on the effects of navigating two languages is missing from most family theories regarding immigrant populations. This scoping review provides a comprehensive overview of the literatures…
Ethnic Differences in the Effects of Five Disciplinary Techniques on Subsequent Externalizing Behavior Problems
To identify disciplinary alternatives to replace spanking, this study investigated ethnic differences in the associations of five disciplinary techniques with subsequent externalizing behavior problems in a national sample of 7- to 11-year-olds with ANCOVAs and difference-score analyses. Most techniques led to significant reductions in externalizing problems for African-Americans or Hispanics, but only after overcoming known biases in ANCOVA and …
Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Modulates Frontal and Temporal Time-Varying EEG Network in Generalized Anxiety Disorder: A Pilot Study
Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is a highly prevalent yet poorly understood chronic mental disorder. Previous studies have associated GAD with excessive activation of the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC). This study aimed to investigate the effect of low-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (repetitive TMS, rTMS) targeting the right DLPFC on clinical symptoms and TMS-evoked time-varying brain network connectivity …
Shared Language Erosion: Rethinking Immigrant Family Communication and Impacts on Youth Development
In this paper we make the case for Shared Language Erosion as a potential explanation for the negative outcomes described in the immigrant paradox for second- and third- generation immigrants (e.g., declines in physical, mental, and behavioral health). While not negating the important role of cultural adaptation, we posit that parent-child communication difficulties due to a process we are calling Shared Language Erosion is driving the observed a…
Probing Two-way Moderation Effects: A Review of Software to Easily Plot Johnson-Neyman Figures
This review explores the possibility of generating Johnson-Neyman’s interaction plot merely using the functions from software or packages without involving complex calculations. Three different programs were compared: Mplus version 8.3, the Johnson-Neyman() function in the interaction package for R version 3.6.2, and PROCESS Macro version 3.4 for IBM SPSS Statistics version 25. These three functions/software are capable of probing or providing su…
Adolescent social withdrawal, parental psychological control, and parental knowledge across seven years: A developmental cascade model
INTRODUCTION: Social withdrawal can be problematic for adolescents, increasing the risk of poor self-efficacy, self-esteem, and academic achievement, and increased levels of depression and anxiety. This prospective study follows students across adolescence, investigating links between social withdrawal and two types of parenting hypothesized to impact or be reactive to changes in social withdrawal. METHODS: Adolescent social withdrawal and parent…
Dual‐centered Ancova: Resolving contradictory results from Lord's paradox with implications for reducing bias in longitudinal analyses ☆
INTRODUCTION: Valid causal inferences are necessary to use developmental research to improve adolescent outcomes. What type of change should be analyzed to approximate causal inferences from longitudinal data? Difference-score and ANCOVA-type analyses often produce contradictory results, a problem known as Lord's paradox. This study investigates 2-group, 2-wave difference-score analyses and ANCOVA, and introduces a method that produces consistent…
Causal Evidence for Exclusively Positive Parenting and for Timeout: Rejoinder to Holden, Grogan-Kaylor, Durrant, and Gershoff (2017)
In our initial article we raised concerns about a paradigm we called “Exclusively Positive Parenting” (EPP). This paradigm opposes all negative disciplinary consequences, including timeout and privilege removal. We argued that the empirical support for EPP was insufficient. Researchers should not rely on insufficient causal evidence to replace well-established parenting perspectives that combine positive parenting with appropriate firm control. I…
The health and healthcare impact of providing insurance coverage to uninsured children: A prospective observational study
Providing health insurance to Medicaid/CHIP-eligible uninsured children improves health, healthcare access and quality, and parental satisfaction; reduces unmet needs and out-of-pocket costs; and saves $2886/insured child/year. African-American children and those who have been uninsured for >6 months are at greatest risk for remaining uninsured. Extrapolation of the savings realized by insuring uninsured, Medicaid/CHIP-eligible children suggests …
An Innovative Methodological Approach to Building Successful Community Partnerships for Improving Insurance Coverage, Health, and Health Care in High-Risk Communities
This innovative, community-based methodology is highly effective, and could prove useful for community-based interventions targeting a variety of childhood and adult health, health-care, and equity issues
A cross-sectional study of parental awareness of and reasons for lack of health insurance among minority children, and the impact on health, access to care, and unmet needs
Half of parents of uninsured minority children are unaware that their children are Medicaid/CHIP-eligible. These uninsured children have suboptimal health, impaired access to care, and major unmet needs. The child's health causes considerable family financial burden, and one in 10 parents ceased work. The study findings indicate urgent needs for better parental education about Medicaid/CHIP, and for improved Medicaid/CHIP outreach and enrollment
