  • ‘So Elusive and Yet So Palpable’

    Open Access•Mary Hunter•CHAPTER•Haydn Studies 2•2025

Every composer makes distinct emotional, intellectual, and somatic demands on performers. These demands are written into the notes, asking our bodies to take particular shapes and execute specific, sometimes unique, actions, and our minds to understand particular ways of organising sound. I will suggest that our habits of thought regarding these demands are profoundly shaped by cultural constructions of the figure of the composer, as well as by m…

  • Haydn Studies 2

Open Access•Emily I Dolan, Matthew Head et al.•BOOK•Haydn Studies 2•2025

Haydn scholarship has mirrored recent trends in musicological research with an increased interest in the cultural context and reception of his music, though he has not received the sustained consideration given to other canonical figures. Over the past decade, more consideration has been paid to Haydn's operas and oratorios which previously tended to be eclipsed by his chamber and orchestral music. These new perspectives are the focus of this col…

  • The Exclusion of Ahmadis from Pakistani Muslimness

    Open Access•Mary Hunter•ARTICLE•ReOrient•2025

A genealogy of anti-Ahmadi narratives in Pakistan can be traced from the Zia regime (1977–88), through Maulana Maududi, and back to Muhammad Iqbal. The Zia regime criminalised and de facto excluded Ahmadis from the Muslim community through the 1984 Ordinance, rationalised in a pamphlet that plagiarised Maududi’s work. Before their criminalisation, Ahmadis were constitutionally excluded from the Pakistani Muslim community through the 1974 Second A…

  • Intern, Orderly, Artist, Corpse

    Mary Hunter•ARTICLE•Oxford Art Journal•2015

Henri Gervex broke into the Parisian art world when he exhibited Autopsy at Ho tel-Dieu at the 1876 Salon. Large and imposing, the oil painting attracted the attention of Salon critics and cartoonists who were troubled and fascinated by Gervex's depiction of two young medical men and their subordinate standing around a naked male cadaver in a hospital dissection room in contemporary Paris (Fig. Gervex's canvas could not fail to entice us', wrote …

  • Engaging Haydn

    Open Access•Mary Hunter, Richard Will•BOOK•Engaging Haydn•2012

Haydn is enjoying renewed appreciation as one of the towering figures of Western music history. This lively collection builds upon this resurgence of interest, with chapters exploring the nature of Haydn's invention and the cultural forces that he both absorbed and helped to shape and express. The volume addresses Haydn's celebrated instrumental pieces, the epoch-making Creation and many lesser-known but superb vocal works including the Masses, t…

Dennis Saleebey, Mary Ski Hunter et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sociology & Social…•1980•Cited by: 1

Much of the difficulty people have in organizing, directing, and coping with their lives is, perhaps, directly traceable to their lack of awareness of, and erroneous assumptions about, the interactional contexts in which they seem or feel powerless. This is especially true, but not exclusively so, of the poor and ethnic, sexual, and political minorities. To the extent that powerlessness exists and is implicated in the various miseries of existenc…

  • The Research Component of Doctoral Programs in Social Work

RICHARD M GRINNELL, Richard M Grinnell Richard M Grinnell et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sociology & Social…•1979

The doctoral program in social work has traditionally been viewed as encompassing a predominantly research-oriented, knowledge-building emphasis. It is acknowledged that if social workers are to be prepared to competently understand, utilize, participate in, and produce practice-relevant empirical studies, research must constitute an integral component of the educational process at the doctoral level. The rapid increase in doctoral programs, heig…

  • A Scale to Measure Love Addiction

Open Access•Mary Ski Hunter, Mary Hunter et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1981

In a recent review of the literature on relationships, Burgess and Husron ( 1 ) point out rhat no systematic artempt has been made to classify according to closeness. Some preliminary classifications have been developed which, e.g., cite movement in towards such characteristics as cooperative-friendly, equality, intensity and emotional-informal ( 5 ) . Such data should be interpreted cautiously ( 1 ) because, for example, relationships not ordina…

  • Client Privacy and Social Work

Linda Hogan, Linda R Hogan et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sociology & Social…•1983

This study examines the effect of agency function or purpose on the handling of client privacy issues in social work agencies. Practitioners working in public and private agencies were compared. The data revealed that, more than those in private agencies, social workers in public agencies: (1) thought that their work would be more affected if they could not rely on outside sources for information about clients; (2) were more often requested to su…
