  • Platonism and the Bible(s)

    Open Access•Johann Cook•ARTICLE•HTS Teologiese Studies /…•2022

A relatively recent development in Septuagint studies is a focus on the alleged influence of Platonism on the Bible(s) (Hebrew Bible/Old Testament and the Septuagint). This article argues that Hellenism did in fact have an impact on Judaism. There are basically two groups of views on this issue. The first is that of the so-called minimalists, who make practically no allowance for freedom by the translators, and the second is that of the so-called…

  • The Septuagint as a holy text – The first ‘bible’ of the early church

    Open Access•Johann Cook•ARTICLE•HTS Teologiese Studies /…•2020

This article acknowledges the fact that historically there are two phases in the emergence of the Septuagint – a Jewish phase and a Christian one. The article deals first with methodological issues. It then offers a historical orientation. In the past some scholars have failed to distinguish between key historical phases: the pre-exilic/exilic (Israelite – 10 tribes), the exilic (the Babylonian exile ‒ 2 tribes) and the post-exilic (Judaean/Jewis…

  • The Origin of the Tradition

Johann Cook•ARTICLE•Journal for the Study of Judaism•2007

The rabbinic tradition of the good and evil yesarim inherent in man is wide-spread in rabbinic and other sources. There seems to be a development from pre-Christian origins to fully-fledged later, Talmudic and Amoraic perspectives. This article traces this development from its later forms back to its possible origin via relevant Jewish texts from Hellenistic writings (Ben Sira and the LXX of Proverbs) and Qumran. It concludes that this tradition …

  • The Septuagint of Proverbs

Raymond C Van Leeuwen, Johann Cook•ARTICLE•The Jewish Quarterly Review•2000

Scholars have argued that this book was influenced extensively by Greek philosophy. The author follows a contextual cultural method. The Greek text is analyzed on four levels: the semantic, syntactical, stylistic and the …
