Mental Health Among Spanish Doctoral Students
Background: Mental health issues among PhD students are rising, a trend believed to be driven by academic and social challenges. Method: A total of 1265 doctorate students from a large university in Barcelona, Spain (739 women; 414 men; 112 marked other options), with a mean age of 32.36 years (SD = 8.20, range: 23–67), were evaluated by means of standardized instruments. Results: Totals of 40.6% and 46.5% of the sample exceeded the cut-off point…
Vulnerability Scale for Families
Purpose: This study develops a Social Vulnerability Scale for Families (SVSF) in social assistance in Spain. Method: First, a systematic literature review and content validation were performed by experts in the field. The first version of the scale included risk and protective factors in the areas of economic situation, housing, health, intrafamilial relationships, sociocultural capital, and educational situation. Secondly, a first pre-pilot test…
Mentoring and Research Self-Efficacy of Doctoral Students
Effective mentoring is an integral component of the doctoral dissertation process. This study aimed to determine the psychometric properties of two questionnaires developed to assess research self-efficacy and the mentoring/supervision process. The sample comprised 1265 doctorate students (mean age = 32.36 years; standard deviation = 8.20). Items in both questionnaires had adequate discrimination indexes and principal component analysis supported…
Abusive Supervision
Abusive leaders affect employees’ emotions and health and produce counterproductive behaviors that cause economic damage to organizations. The literature has focused predominantly on the antecedents of abusive supervision and its negative impact, providing knowledge on mechanisms that link abusive supervision to consequences for subordinates. There has been limited research on the supervisor perspective, on the group level, and on recovery. This …
Feeling unsafe in Italy’s biggest cities
Crime and fear of crime are key challenges for civic coexistence in contemporary cities, specifically because of the unequal relationship between the two phenomena. In the case of Italy, for instance, even though crime has been trending downward over the past few decades, people are increasingly concerned about their safety. Based on survey data ( N = 6002) collected in Milan, Naples, Rome, and Turin, this research provides a cross-city compariso…
Confirmatory factor analysis with missing data in a small sample
The presence of missing data and small sample sizes are very common in social and health sciences. Concurrently to present a methodology to solve the small sample size and missing data, we aim to present a definition of Cognitive Reserve for people with Down Syndrome. This population has become an appealing focus to study this concept because of the high incidence of dementia. The accidental sample comprised 35 persons with DS (16–35 years). A to…
Alzheimer’s Disease Caregiver Characteristics and Their Relationship with Anticipatory Grief
In Alzheimer's disease, two fundamental aspects become important for caregivers: ambiguity and ambivalence. Thus, anticipatory grief is considered an active psychological process that is very different from the mere anticipation of death. The present study aims to determine which characteristics of family caregivers of people with dementia, such as age, gender, educational level, relationship with the person with dementia, years with dementia or …
Relationship between Quality of Life and the Complexity of Default Mode Network in Resting State Functional Magnetic Resonance Image in Down Syndrome
The results are interpreted as evidence that, even at rest, connectivity levels are detected as already shown in the community population and that less intense connectivity levels correlate with higher levels of Quality of Life in people with Down syndrome
A Structural Equation Model Estimation of the Role of Social Vulnerability as a Predictor of People's Feelings of Unsafety
The use of religion in coping with grief among bereaved Malay Muslim parents
The purpose of this study is to explore the influence of religion on bereaved parents after the death of a child. Literature had attempted to understand how religiosity may influence parental grief both in positive and negative ways. However, this area is scarcely explored in the Malaysian context. This qualitative study involved 11 bereaved parents who lost their children due to accidents (n = 9) and homicide (n = 2). Open-ended questions that f…
The Dynamics of Spousal Relationships After the Loss of a Child Among Bereaved Malay Parents
The purpose of this study is to explore the dynamics of the relationship between bereaved parents after the loss of their child. Literature has attempted to understand how coping mechanisms related to gender characteristics, communication, and intimacy influence the spousal relationship after the loss of a child. However, this area is scarcely explored in a Malaysian context. This qualitative study involved 11 bereaved parents. These parents had …
Young Adults’ Individuation with Mother and Father as a Function of Dysfunctional Family Patterns, Gender and Parental Divorce
This study analyzes young adults’ individuation with mother (IM) and father (IF) as a function of dysfunctional family patterns (DFPs)—caught between, parental pressure, unfair caregiving, and feeling deprived—as well as gender and parental divorce. It examines if parental divorce is associated with the presence of DFP in the young adults’ family of origin and if the presence of DFP explains the association between parental divorce and lower leve…

Qualitative methods of data analysis in psychology
In this article, we present a general overview of the state of qualitative research in psychology by analyzing publications found in the Institute for Scientific Information's Web of Science database. Our objective is to provide a global perspective on the use of qualitative methods in data analysis and the frequency with which they are used in the journals. In total, 4840 articles were analyzed. We used bibliometrics methods to describe the publ…
Assessment of the Familial Relationships of Young Adult Children of Separated Parents
The aim of this work was the psychometric study of six scales designed to assess the familial relationships of young adult children of separated parents. The analyzed constructs are interparental conflict, loyalty conflict, coalition, parentification, children's perceptions of the parent–child relationships, and young adult perception of the separation–individuation process. Internal consistency and factorial validity was studied through a sample…
Classical and Bayesian Estimation in the Logistic Regression Model Applied to Diagnosis of Child Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
The limitations inherent to classical estimation of the logistic regression models are known. The Bayesian approach in statistical analysis is an alternative to be considered, given that it makes it possible to introduce prior information about the phenomenon under study. The aim of the present work is to analyze binary and multinomial logistic regression simple models estimated by means of a Bayesian approach in comparison to classical estimatio…
Confirmatory Factor Analysis of Parents' and Teachers' Ratings of DSM-IV Symptoms of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in a Spanish Sample
Confirmatory factor analysis examined the factor structure of DSM IV Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder symptoms and analyzed the differences in informants' ratings of ADHD symptoms by children's age and sex. A sample of 1,018 Spanish school children, 574 girls and 444 boys, ages 4 to 12 years, was rated by teachers and parents. Confirmatory factor analysis showed a similar fit for the three-factor model of Inattention, Hyperactivity, and I…
