Religious Violence in Sixteenth-Century France
The religious violence resulting from the reformations of the sixteenth century shared much in common with the religious violence of the medieval period that preceded it. It was largely sanctioned by secular and/or ecclesiastical authority. And it tended to break out in places where new religious ideas threatened to subvert established ways of navigating the boundaries between the visible and invisible worlds. Martyrs and Murderers
Stuart Carroll has written Martyrs and Murderers for several different audiences. For scholars and specialists the book is a useful summary and synthesis of a good deal of original research—much of it undertaken by Carroll himself—on three generations of the Guise family in the sixteenth century. The principal narrative for specialists is how much all three generations of Guises—Claude, François, and Henri I—were motivated by concern and anxiety …
Politics and Religion in Early Bourbon France
This volume of essays reflects recent research on the interplay of religion and politics in the period from roughly the abjuration and coronation of Henri IV (1593–1594) to the defeat of the rebel Huguenot armies in 1629. The League in Burgundy
When Henri Drouot published his major study of the Catholic League in Burgundy in 1937, he argued that the principal cause for the split between Leaguers and royalists in the province was due to social tensions between the wealthy magistrates in the Parlement and the ‘bourgeoisie seconde’ who dominated the hôtel de ville in Dijon, namely the lawyers, solicitors, notaries and greffiers of the legal profession. This article challenges that assessme…
