The Advantage of Big Team Science
The credibility revolution in psychology and related sciences contributed to the adoption of large-scale research initiatives known as Big Team Science (BTS). BTS has made significant advances in addressing issues of replication, statistical power, and diversity through the use of larger samples and more representative cross-cultural data. However, while these collaborations hold great potential, they also introduce unique challenges related to t…
The Challenges and Solutions of In‐Person Big‐Team Science
Big‐Team Science (BTS) offers a powerful framework for advancing psychological research through large‐scale collaboration, yet the unique challenges of conducting in‐person BTS studies remain under‐examined. This manuscript draws on the Psychological Science Accelerator's in‐person stereotype threat study, which involved 2500+ Black undergraduate students at over 20 U.S. universities, to illustrate these challenges and solutions in action. The pr…
Investigating object orientation effects across 18 languages
Mental simulation theories of language comprehension propose that people automatically create mental representations of objects mentioned in sentences. Mental representation is often measured with the sentence-picture verification task, wherein participants first read a sentence that implies the object property (i.e., shape and orientation). Participants then respond to an image of an object by indicating whether it was an object from the sentenc…
The reliability of student evaluations of teaching
Student evaluations of teaching (SETs) are commonly used in college classrooms to assess instructional effectiveness, guide administrative decisions, and provide feedback to instructors. Although often treated as reliable measures, little research has assessed the long-term reliability of SETs. We analysed over 30years of SET data from a large public university in the United States to examine the reliability of evaluations across instructors, cou…

(In)Alienable Worth? Cultural Logics of Dignity, Honor, and Face and their Links to Prosociality Across the World
Cultural logic is a set of cultural scripts and patterns organized around a central theme. The cultural logics of dignity, honor, and face describe different ways of evaluating a person’s worth and maintaining cooperation. These cultural logics vary in prevalence across cultures. In this study, we collaboratively develop and validate a measure capturing these cultural logics, which will allow us to map world cultures based on the prevalence of th…
Predicting the replicability of social and behavioural science claims in Covid-19 preprints
Replications are important for assessing the reliability of published findings. However, they are costly, and it is infeasible to replicate everything. Accurate, fast, lower-cost alternatives such as eliciting predictions could accelerate assessment for rapid policy implementation in a crisis and help guide a more efficient allocation of scarce replication resources. We elicited judgements from participants on 100 claims from preprints about an e…
Are Small Effects the Indispensable Foundation for a Cumulative Psychological Science? A Reply to Götz et al. (2022)
In the January 2022 issue of Perspectives, Götz et al. argued that small effects are “the indispensable foundation for a cumulative psychological science.” They supported their argument by claiming that (a) psychology, like genetics, consists of complex phenomena explained by additive small effects; (b) psychological-research culture rewards large effects, which means small effects are being ignored; and (c) small effects become meaningful at sca…
Perceived meaning, pandemic self-efficacy, social support, and discrimination predict trajectories of peri-pandemic growth and distress for international students
Despite the stressors they face, many international students demonstrated a trajectory of resilience. Positive coping factors and environmental factors predicted distress or peri-pandemic growth, which can inform interventions and studies examining trajectories of distress during prolonged adversity. Situational factors shape moral judgements in the trolley dilemma in Eastern, Southern and Western countries in a culturally diverse sample
Validation of a Four Factor Measure
Academic-related stressors are common for college students, such as future career decisions or pressures to succeed academically. Furthermore, the impact of health and finance issues may add to the burden. Perceived support from an academic community, peers, or family can provide a buffer to mitigate the effects of these stressors. Several studies have emphasized the importance of support by instructors in particular and found that students' perc…

Meaning, social support, and resilience as predictors of posttraumatic growth
120) self-reported perceived presence and search for meaning in life, social support, resilience, and posttraumatic growth (PTG). After controlling for amount of property damaged, posttraumatic stress symptoms, gender, religion, and ethnicity or race, presence and search for meaning, social support, and resilience explained significant additional variance in PTG scores. This research adds to the growing understanding of how individuals respond to…
Methods to detect low quality data and its implication for psychological research
A novel dissemination effort for prolonged exposure
Results suggested that this sequential four-part curriculum may be an effective way of combining education, training, and dissemination efforts. Future research should examine if similar results can be achieved with a controlled research design and whether outcomes would generalize to actual PE delivery skills in routine clinical care. Depression, Anxiety, and Stress
The 21-item Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scales (DASS-21) is a self-report measure that is easy to administer, quick to score, and is freely available. Widely used in diverse settings and populations, confirmatory factor analytic evidence has accumulated for a bifactor model underlying this multidimensional measure. Studies employing an exploratory bifactor approach to more closely examine its underlying structure and inter-relations of factor…
Textisms”
The purpose of this study was to determine whether certain textisms (texting cues) were perceived as more comfortable than others, both in the context of conversation as well as with regards to the general perception of the textism. Participants were assigned to one of two conversations and were asked to rate how comfortable they would feel after each statement in a conversation. Next, they were all asked to rank the general comfort ratings of ea…

Blog topic and word frequency
Researchers and directories have difficulty classifying blogs into categories resulting from the rate at which blogs are created, as well as the overlap in content. Further, although blog popularity may be apparent in Internet traffic, the determinants of authority or status of a blog have yet to be explored. This article examined how word content affected blog status through several linguistic analyses by examining word usage across 24 high- and…
