  • Why Believe in Normative Supervenience

    Debbie Roberts•BOOK•Oxford Studies in Metaethics 13•2018•Cited by: 2•References: 10

According to many, that the normative supervenes on the non-normative is a truism of normative discourse. This chapter argues that those committed to more specific moral, aesthetic, and epistemic supervenience theses should also hold (NS*): As a matter of conceptual necessity, whenever something has a normative property, it has a base property or collection of base properties that metaphysically necessitates the normative one. The main aim in thi…

  • Thick Concepts

    Debbie Roberts•CHAPTER•Routledge Handbook of Metaethics•2017

This chapter shows that thick concepts deserve more attention in general than they currently enjoy. A standard way of introducing thick concepts is to point to an intuitive contrast between concepts like generous, brutal, crude and tactless, and concepts like good, bad, right and wrong. Because, historically, much of the thick concepts debate merely assumed that thick concepts were evaluative concepts, this issue is relatively under-explored. Par…

  • Modelling withdrawal and persistence for initial teacher training

    Open Access•Deborah Roberts, Debbie Roberts•ARTICLE•British Educational Research…•2012•Cited by: 1•References: 12

This paper proposes a theoretical model to explain trainee withdrawal and persistence within higher education (HE) based initial teacher training (ITT). Within ITT, attrition and persistence are under‐researched and under‐theorised, thus providing the rationale for this study. Within HE more broadly, a number of models have been proposed, most notably the seminal work of Tinto. However Tinto's Longitudinal Model of Departure was postulated for un…

  • Does the Explanatory Constraint on Practical Reasons favour Naturalism about Practical Reasons

Deborah Roberts, Debbie Roberts•ARTICLE•South African Journal of Philosophy•2005•References: 2

There is an explanatory constraint on practical reasons: practical reasons have to be the kinds of things that we can act for. Some philosophers, notably Bernard Williams, have argued that the explanatory constraint favours internalism about reasons: for an agent to have a reason to Ф it is at least a necessary condition that she would, after ideal deliberation, be motivated to Ф. Internalism suggests that naturalism about reasons is more plausib…

  • The Rationality of Happiness

Deborah Roberts, Debbie Roberts•ARTICLE•South African Journal of Philosophy•2004

In his recent book, Happiness: personhood, community, purpose, Pedro Tabensky answers the question of what happiness is. He develops an Aristotelian account of happiness that, he claims, is everyone’s maximally rational ideal. Much of the support for this claim rests on what Tabensky calls the method of critical introspection. This method involves introspecting on the kind of beings that we are and the kind of lives we can thus lead. If properly …
