The Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence in Identifying and Extracting Single Case Participant Demographics Data
Performing research syntheses can be challenging due to time, labor, and monetary costs. This manuscript presents the findings of two studies that investigate the usability and feasibility of artificial intelligence (AI) systems to assist with performing research syntheses. In Study 1, participant demographics data coded by humans were compared against data extracted using ChatGPT-4 and Google Bard from 67 single case research design (SCRD) studi…
The (non) numeric truths behind college and career aspirations
This article explored the college and career choices of 963 students across six urban secondary schools in a large public school district in the Southwestern United States. A Quantitative Critical Race Theory, or QuantCrit, analysis was applied to expose the false narrative of number neutrality and the systemic racism that belies it. Findings demonstrate how the myth of meritocracy through education (as ‘the great equalizer’) is perpetuated when …

Caring for the carers
Indifferent, (Un)critical, and anti-intellectual
Current conservative assaults on Critical Race Theory (CRT) in education contend that elementary and secondary teachers and teacher education faculty are not only ‘teaching CRT’, but also hatred of white people and of ‘America’. This article is based on a study that used CRT analytical tools and narrative inquiry to examine pre- and in-service teachers’ understanding of CRT bans, race, and racism. Through individual and focus group interviews wit…

In White Christian Privilege: The Illusion of Religious Equality in America, Khyati Y. Joshi leverages her lived experiences as a Hindu Indian American Woman of Color with academic expertise and educational commitments to teaching about race, religion, and immigration in the United States. The book is well-researched, makes well-supported arguments from various points of entry, discusses historical and current events, and shares interview narrati…
“Teachers Don’t Really Encourage it”
Seeking to enhance efforts to diversify the teaching profession, this article centers the educational experiences of high school Students of Color. Using a Critical Race Theory framework, this study examines the relationship between Students’ of Color school experiences and their perceptions of the teaching profession. Findings reveal that these students perceive the teaching profession as a boring, undervalued, and white profession, and that con…
Like where are those teachers?”
In seeking to address teacher shortages in the United States, teacher preparation programs, and state education department leaders in particular, have largely focused on the recruitment of new teachers. To some extent, recruitment efforts have also included attention to racially diversifying the teacher ranks. Using a Critical Race Theory framework, this article challenges hegemonic narratives about Teacher of Color absence in, and departure from…
A critical race theory analysis of the ‘demographic diversity’ gap in schools
The shortage of Teachers of Color relative to the growing racial/ethnic diversity of the U.S. public school student population has caught the attention of many educators and policy makers. Several factors contribute to this teacher-student demographic diversity gap, especially the lower numbers of college Students of Color, relative to white students, enrolled in teacher education programs. Using a Critical Race Theory framework and qualitative d…
A multi-institutional study of inquiry-based lab activities using the Augmented Reality Sandbox
We developed and tested different pedagogical treatments using an Augmented Reality (AR) Sandbox to teach introductory geoscience students about reading topographic maps at five institutions in both pilot and full implementation studies. The AR Sandbox treatments were characterized as 1) unstructured play, 2) a semi-structured lesson, and 3) a structured lesson. The success of each was contrasted with the control condition of a traditional topogr…

Product Development of Branded, Packaged Household Goods in Britain, 1870–1914
The three companies whose history forms the subject of this article became leaders in a sector of the British economy—consumer goods—generally regarded as one of the most successful in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Product innovation and development, achieved internally or through acquisition, enabled these firms to become market leaders. We therefore analyze the processes of product development within the three firms, using …

Effective Multicultural Curriculum Transformation Across Disciplines
Resistance to multicultural curriculum transformation has long been assumed to be a function solely of faculty racism, sexism, classism, and so forth, especially in the fields of "advanced" mathematics and "hard" sciences. Although this may account for a percentage of that resistance, it is a small percentage. In fact, most faculty are interested in multiculturally transforming their curriculum. The problem is that few know how to go about doing …
