  • A financial resource curse in the context of a small developing resource-based economy: The case of Suriname

Open Access•Xanegay Huur, Syed Mansoob Murshed et al.•ARTICLE•Mineral Economics•2026

Our study explores the impact of mineral resources on financial development in Suriname via a commodity-price-shock channel. Using a Structural VAR (SVAR) model and time series data from 1980 to 2021, we find evidence of a financial resource curse. More specifically, negative commodity price shocks undermine financial development by reducing bank lending and deposits, deteriorating bank asset quality, lowering bank profitability and widening the …

  • Mind the gap, mind corruption: Cross-country differences between multidimensional and monetary poverty

Octavia Rizky Prasetyo, Elissaios Papyrakis et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Poverty and Social…•2025

Countries with similar rates of monetary poverty differ with respect to their multidimensional poverty rates. A large positive multidimensional/monetary poverty gap suggests that many non-monetary poor still fail to meet some of their most basic needs. We make use of panel data to examine these cross-country differences between monetary and multidimensional poverty and explicitly link them to underlying country characteristics. Our analysis build…

  • The Socio-Economic Impact of an Abrupt Loss of Oil: A Synthetic Control Approach in the Case of Sudan

Open Access•Sabna Mohamed Abbass Ali, Mansoob Murshed et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Asian and African…•2025•References: 23

With the secession of South Sudan in 2011, the Republic of Sudan experienced a sudden loss of more than 70% of its oil reserves. Few countries have experienced such a dramatic macroeconomic adjustment within a short period of time. While earlier studies have explored the socio-economic impacts of oil discoveries, little is known about what happens in the case of an abrupt reversal of an oil windfall. We make use of the synthetic control method to…

  • Health and Extractive Resources: A Research Note based on Evidence from Indonesian Districts

Open Access•Dina Pramudianti, Elissaios Papyrakis et al.•ARTICLE•Bulletin of Indonesian Economic…•2024•References: 21

Most empirical studies on extractive resources examine their effects at the macro level and focus on economic and institutional outcomes. We perform a subnational analysis of the relationship between mineral resource dependence and health measures at the district level in Indonesia, using annual panel data from 2010 to 2020. Fixed-effect models suggest that households in mineral-dependent districts face a higher morbidity risk than households in …

  • Media Credibility and Voter Penalization of Corrupt Politicians in Latin America

Open Access•C Van Klaveren, Mansoob Murshed et al.•ARTICLE•Latin American Politics and Society•2024

There has been a significant growth of social media as a means to inform oneself about politics. This article explores the consequences of this trend on the credibility audiences attribute to news exposing corrupt politicians and on their willingness to penalize the exposed politicians in elections. The study focuses on ten Latin American cities and employs a randomized control trial using experimental data embedded in a survey. Through this meth…

  • Evaluating the economic effects of the Ebola virus disease in Liberia: A synthetic control approach

    Open Access•Amos Z B Flomo, Elissaios Papyrakis et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of International…•2023

We use the synthetic control method to isolate the impact of the 2014–2016 Ebola virus disease epidemic on the Liberian economy. We find a slight initial decline in the unemployment rate, followed by an increase of roughly 1% ( p ‐value ≤5%). The effect on inflation is more substantial (close to a 7% and 18% increase 4 and 5years after the outbreak) but statistically insignificant in the preceding period (2014–2016). We do not identify any other …

  • International Collaboration in Times of Pandemics: An Urgent Need for Reforming our Global Financial System

Open Access•Murat Arsel, Binyam Afewerk Demena et al.•ARTICLE•Progress in Development Studies•2023•References: 1

Better, swifter and more responsive international coordination is needed within our global financial system for the containment of the pandemic and its effects. This requires better international tax coordination with a higher global minimum corporate tax, comprehensive coverage of sectors and firms, inclusion of all current tax havens and more generous redistribution of excess profits to developing nations based on user location. There also need…

  • Corruption and the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative

Elissaios Papyrakis, Morris Rieger et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•2017

The Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) has received much attention as a scheme that can help reduce corruption in mineral-rich developing economies. To our knowledge, this paper provides the first empirical attempt (using panel data) to explore how EITI membership links to changes in corruption levels. We also examine whether the different stages in EITI implementation (initial commitment, candidature, full compliance) influence…

  • The Resource Curse - What Have We Learned from Two Decades of Intensive Research: Introduction to the Special Issue

Elissaios Papyrakis•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•2017

There has been increasing interest in the so-called ‘resource curse’, that is the tendency of resource-rich countries to underperform in several development outcomes. This has generated a mountain of (often contradictory) evidence leaving many floundering in the flood of information. This special issue compiles eight papers from some of the most prominent contributors to this literature, combining original research with critical reflection on the…

  • Buildings behaving badly: A behavioral experiment on how different motivational frames influence residential energy label adoption in the Netherlands

Open Access•Jillian Student, Elissaios Papyrakis et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Housing and the Built…•2016•References: 5

Heating buildings contributes to approximately 36 % of Europe's energy demand and several EU member states have adopted mandatory energy labels to improve energy efficiency by promoting home weatherization investments. This paper focuses on the perception of the energy label for residential buildings in the Netherlands and the role of different frames (egoistic, biospheric and social norms and neutral frames) in motivating adoption of energy labe…

  • Gender and Trade Aspects of Labour Markets

Elissaios Papyrakis, Arlette Covarrubias et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•2012

We provide a comprehensive up-to-date review of the large body of theory and evidence on the linkages between trade liberalisation and gender inequality in income, as well as two of the latter's key underlying determinants: wages and employment. On balance, the evidence for developing countries points to an overall beneficial impact of trade expansion on female employment, both relative to male employment and in absolute terms, although largely c…

  • Online calculators of ecological footprint: Do they promote or dissuade sustainable behaviour

    Open Access•Jennifer Franz, Elissaios Papyrakis•ARTICLE•Sustainable Development•2010•Cited by: 1•References: 3

Ecological footprint (EF) indices estimate the impact of an individual's lifestyle on the planet by converting levels of consumption into the amount of land needed to sustain production levels and lifestyle choices. Several popular organizations (e.g. WWF, Global Footprint Network) now offer personalized EF calculators to help inform consumers of the impacts of their personal consumption habits. In this paper, we evaluate the most popular online …
