The Ups and Downs of Black and White
The Implicit Association Test (IAT) was used to measure population levels of conceptual alignment among two polar sensory metaphors and clusters of concepts to which they are commonly applied. A total of 873 participants were tested online, to compare within- and between-cluster alignments of concepts associated with two different polar sensory metaphors (up/down and black/white). IAT results were sensitive to semantic alignments that were also p…
Sleep spindles consolidate declarative memory with tags
Tags are attached to salient information during the wake period, which can preferentially determine what information can be consolidated during sleep. Previous studies demonstrated that spindles during non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep give priority to strengthening memory representations with tags, indicating a privileged reactivation of tagged information. The current meta-analysis investigated whether and how spindles can capture different t…

Cultural background and input familiarity influence multisensory emotion perception
We conclude that cultural background and input familiarity interact to influence modality dominance during multisensory emotion perception. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2024 APA, all rights reserved)
Cultural Experience Influences Multisensory Emotion Perception in Bilinguals
Emotion perception frequently involves the integration of visual and auditory information. During multisensory emotion perception, the attention devoted to each modality can be measured by calculating the difference between trials in which the facial expression and speech input exhibit the same emotion (congruent) and trials in which the facial expression and speech input exhibit different emotions (incongruent) to determine the modality that has…
Cognitive and linguistic predictors of bilingual single-word translation
Girls Study Girls Inc
Between 2004 and 2007, Girls Incorporated ® conducted research about the experience of five affiliates from different parts of the United States as they engaged with girls in Girls Study Girls Inc., a participatory evaluation project that explored the meaning and impact of Girls Inc. environments and uncovered ways such environments can be improved. We describe the context and motivation for using participatory action research [PAR] in Girls Inc.…
