  • Genetic Differentiation Between and Within Northern Native American Language Groups

    Open Access•Jessica A Weise, Jillian Ng et al.•ARTICLE•Forensic Sciences Research•2021•References: 3

The National Research Council recommends that genetic differentiation among subgroups of ethnic samples be lower than 3% of the total genetic differentiation within the ethnic sample to be used for estimating reliable random match probabilities for forensic use. Native American samples in the United States' Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) database represent four language families: Algonquian, Na-Dene, Eskimo-Aleut, and Salishan. However, a mini…

  • An Inter-Laboratory Study of DNA-Based Identity, Parentage and Species Testing in Animal Forensic Genetics

Open Access•Sree Kanthaswamy, Sreetharan Kanthaswamy et al.•ARTICLE•Forensic Sciences Research•2021

The probative value of animal forensic genetic evidence relies on laboratory accuracy and reliability. Inter-laboratory comparisons allow laboratories to evaluate their performance on specific tests and analyses and to continue to monitor their output. The International Society for Animal Genetics (ISAG) administered animal forensic comparison tests (AFCTs) in 2016 and 2018 to assess the limitations and capabilities of laboratories offering foren…

  • Effects of hybridization on pelvic morphology

    Open Access•L T Buck, David C Katz et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Evolution•2021•Cited by: 6•References: 82

Ancient DNA analyses have shown that interbreeding between hominin taxa occurred multiple times. Although admixture is often reflected in skeletal phenotype, the relationship between the two remains poorly understood, hampering interpretation of the hominin fossil record. Direct study of this relationship is often impossible due to the paucity of hominin fossils and difficulties retrieving ancient genetic material. Here, we use a sample of known …

  • Genetic analysis of samples from wild populations opens new perspectives on hybridization between long‐tailed ( Macaca fascicularis ) and rhesus macaques ( Macaca mulatta )

Open Access•Srichan Bunlungsup, Sree Kanthaswamy et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2017

In the past decade, many researchers have published papers about hybridization between long-tailed and rhesus macaques. These previous works have proposed unidirectional gene flow with the Isthmus of Kra as the zoogeographical barrier of hybridization. However, these reports analyzed specimens of unknown origin and/or did not include specimens from Thailand, the center of the proposed area of hybridization. Collected specimens of long-tailed and …

  • An empirical comparison of short tandem repeats (STRs) and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) for relatedness estimation in Chinese rhesus macaques ( Macaca mulatta )

    Open Access•C T Ro, Cody T Ross et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2014

We compare the effectiveness of short tandem repeat (STR) and single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) genotypes for estimating pairwise relatedness, using molecular data and pedigree records from a captive Chinese rhesus macaque population at the California National Primate Research Center. We find that a panel of 81 SNPs is as effective at estimating first-order kin relationships as a panel of 14 highly polymorphic STRs. We note, however, that the …

  • Diversity and molecular phylogeny of mitochondrial DNA of rhesus macaques ( Macaca mulatta ) in Bangladesh

Open Access•M Kamrul Hasan, Mohammed M Feeroz et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2014

While studies of rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) in the eastern (e.g., China) and western (e.g., India) parts of their geographic range have revealed major genetic differences that warrant the recognition of two different subspecies, little is known about genetic characteristics of rhesus macaques in the transitional zone extending from eastern India and Bangladesh through the northern part of Indo-China, the probable original homeland of the sp…

  • Familial aggregation of chronic diarrhea disease ( CDD ) in rhesus macaques ( M acaca mulatta )

Open Access•Sree Kanthaswamy, Hanie A Elfenbein et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2014

Chronic diarrheal disease (CDD) is a critical problem for breeders of captive rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta), as it results in significant levels of morbidity and death annually. As with other inflammatory disorders, CDD is thought to be caused by environmental and/or genetic factors. Although correspondence between the characters defined as Mendelian by pedigree or segregation analysis and functional genes is difficult to establish, such analys…

  • Development and validation of a SNP‐based assay for inferring the genetic ancestry of rhesus macaques ( Macaca mulatta )

Open Access•Sree Kanthaswamy, Zachary Johnson et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2014

Rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) are an important primate model species in several areas of biomedical research. The wide geographic distribution of this species has led to significant genetic differentiation among local and regional populations. These regional differences can be important factors in the selection of the most appropriate subjects for particular research studies, as animals from different populations can respond differently to the…

  • Single‐Nucleotide Polymorphisms Reveal Patterns of Allele Sharing Across the Species Boundary Between Rhesus ( Macaca mulatta ) and Cynomolgus ( M. fascicularis ) Macaques

Open Access•JESSICA A SATKOSKI TRASK, WENDY T GARNICA et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2013

Both phenotypic and genetic evidence for asymmetric hybridization between rhesus ( Macaca mulatta ) and cynomolgus ( Macaca fascicularis ) macaques has been observed in the region of Indochina where both species are sympatric. The large‐scale sharing of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II alleles between the two species in this region supports the hypothesis that genes, and especially genes involved in immune response, are being trans…

  • Population Genetics of the W ashington N ational P rimate R esearch C enter's ( W a NPRC ) Captive Pigtailed Macaque ( Macaca nemestrina ) Population

Open Access•Sree Kanthaswamy, Jillian Ng et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2012

Pigtailed macaques ( Macaca nemestrina ) provide an important model for biomedical research on human disease and for studying the evolution of primate behavior. The genetic structure of captive populations of pigtailed macaques is not as well described as that of captive rhesus ( M. mulatta) or cynomolgus ( M. fascicularis ) macaques. The W ashington N ational P rimate R esearch C enter houses the largest captive colony of pigtailed macaques loca…

  • The effect of SNP discovery method and sample size on estimation of population genetic data for Chinese and Indian rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta)

  • Genotyping single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) across species in Old World Monkeys

Open Access•Ripan S Malhi, Jessica Satkoski Trask et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2011

The development of DNA markers is becoming increasingly useful in the field of primatology for studies on paternity, population history, and biomedical research. In this study, we determine the efficacy of using cross‐species amplification to identify single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in closely related species. The DNA of 93 individuals representing seven Old World Monkey species was analyzed to identify SNPs using cross‐species amplificati…

  • Association between hybrid status and reproductive success of captive male and female rhesus macaques ( Macaca mulatta ) at the California National Primate Research Center (CNPRC)

    Open Access•Sree Kanthaswamy, Parry M R Clarke et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2011

The California National Primate Research Center (CNPRC) houses more than 1,000 rhesus macaques ( Macaca mulatta ) of mixed Chinese–Indian ancestry. Most of these animals are kept in outdoor field cages, the colony's long term breeding resource. Since 2001, hybrids comprised between 4 and 49% of the field cage populations, but in most cases have represented a maximum of 10% of those populations. The increasing prevalence of hybrids is partly due t…

  • Genetic characterization of specific pathogen‐free rhesus macaque ( Macaca mulatta ) populations at the California National Primate Research Center (CNPRC)

Open Access•Sree Kanthaswamy, Alex Kou et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2010

A study based on 14 STRs was conducted to understand intergenerational genetic changes that have occurred within the California National Primate Research Center's (CNPRC) regular specific pathogen‐free (SPF) and super‐SPF captive rhesus macaque populations relative to their conventional founders. Intergenerational genetic drift has caused age cohorts of each study population, especially within the conventional population, to become increasingly d…
