  • An Exceptional Early Byzantine Censer in Antalya

    Linda Safran, John Osborne•ARTICLE•Gesta•2025

This study explores the imagery and meanings of an exceptional gilt-silver censer from the Sion Treasure, housed today in Antalya (Türkiye). The censer bears silver stamps that help date it late in the reign of Emperor Justinian I (ca. 550–65), as well as a dedicatory inscription that names the bishop who donated many other objects in that treasure. The Antalya censer stands out for its cylindrical form and for its figural frieze, which depicts e…

John Osborne•ARTICLE•Journal of the Warburg and…•2024

A little-known mendicant order, the Apostolic Clerics of St Jerome, better known as the ‘Jesuati’, was founded by Giovanni Colombini of Siena in the mid-fourteenth century, receiving formal recognition from Pope Urban V at Viterbo in 1367. The congregation flourished, particularly over the course of the fifteenth century when it established conventual houses in most major cities of central and northern Italy, but was eventually suppressed in 1668…

  • The elephant in the room (at Notre-Dame de Gourdon, Burgundy)

    John Osborne•ARTICLE•Florilegium•2023

John Osborne begins this paper with a question: what was an elephant doing on the wall of a Romanesque church dedicated to the Virgin Mary’s Assumption? He answers by considering first the placement of the elephant in the other art of the building and the relationship of the lower part of the wall-painting (called the dado) to the higher images; then by considering what medieval Europeans would have known about elephants from natural history book…

    Open Access•John Osborne•ARTICLE•Scientia Canadensis Canadian…•2022

In the mid-nineteenth century photographers were challenged by the absence of light in indoor and underground spaces. One promising solution was the intense light created by the combustion of magnesium, which became commercially available in England in 1864. This article examines the use of magnesium wire by the pioneer Canadian photographer Charles Smeaton, who took the first pictures in the Roman catacombs in the winter of 1866-1867

  • Urban Developments in Late Antique and Medieval Rome

Ann Karin van Dijk, Dale Kinney et al.•BOOK•Urban Developments in Late…•2021

A narrative of decline punctuated by periods of renewal has long structured perceptions of Rome's late antique and medieval history. In their probing contributions to this volume, a multi-disciplinary group of scholars provides alternative approaches to understanding the period. Addressing developments in governance, ceremony, literature, art, music, clerical education and the city's very sense of its own identity, the essays examine how a variet…

Analyses of writing culture in tenth-century Rome have been impeded by an absence of manuscripts and documents that can be assigned unquestionably to scriptoria in the city. This paper will examine the possibility that one such document has hitherto been hiding in plain sight, as it were: the dower charter given by Emperor Otto II to the Byzantine princess Theophanu on the occasion of their marriage in St Peter's on 14 April 972. Usually consider…

Born into a remarkable family, Henry James exhibited signs of precocity early on. In his autobiography, he chronicled his discovery, at the age of about eleven, that a hyperactive consciousness and restless curiosity such as his had a value that could be put to critical use. The 1880s were a particularly rich period in James's career as critic and novelist. In 1882 he was saluted by Howells as the chief exemplar among the new school of novelists …

The purpose is to identify which features, or combinations of features, are common to more flue…

Access to adequate, affordable housing is an essential first step in the re‐settlement process for immigrants and refugees. It is the basis from which newcomers look for jobs, language training and other services. Without such housing, newcomers may have limited security of tenure, compromised health, jeopardized education and employment opportunities and impaired social and family life. The attraction of the area is the affordable, but poor quality, housing and proximity of service agencies. The area is characterized by unemployment, poverty, crime, and safety issues. It is also the destination of a significant influx of Aboriginal people, also seeking affordable housing and services. This study tracks refugee households over a thr…

    Open Access•John Osborne•CHAPTER•The Cambridge History of Literary…•1997

The theory and criticism of neo-classical drama at its height had been based on principles of generic purity and exclusiveness; the three dramatic genres, tragedy, comedy and pastoral together were held to provide a complete picture of human life in its three forms; the life of the court, the life of the town and the life of the country (d'Aubignac, Pratique , p. 142).
