Open Access•Susanne Urban, Nils Hertting et al.•ARTICLE•Local Environment•2025

The Clean Energy for All Europeans package, launched by the EU in 2019, provides a legal framework to guide the creation and management of energy communities (EC). According to the package, ECs are expected to aid a transition towards a renewable energy system by involving and empowering citizens, and thereby address issues such as poverty, social equity and “energy segregation”. In technical and economic terms, on the other hand, ECs are mainly …

  • Organizing Integration in the Swedish Labor and Housing Markets

Open Access•Susanne Urban, Emma Holmqvist et al.•ARTICLE•Nordic Journal of Migration…•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 25

Policies for refugees' settlement, housing, and employment are usually not formulated or analyzed in relation to each other. This study aims to address the dialectical relationship among settlement, housing, and labor market activation policies for refugees. To do this, we draw on Benson's (see Benson 1977; 1983) conceptualization of the dialectical perspective and its four interconnected principles (social construction/production, context, contr…

The study adds time perspective and superdiversity and operationalizes the mixed embeddedness framework to facilitate a quantitative study on three levels of analysis. Detailed register data for two cohorts of immigrants—those who arrived four years before and those who arrive…

    Open Access•Susanne Urban, Tobias Schölin•ARTICLE•Nordic Journal of Migration…•2017•References: 26

This study contributes to the discussion on the value of education for self-employment among foreign-born persons in Sweden. Register-based data on all individuals in Sweden with an education in healthcare are used in the analysis. The overrepresentation of foreign-born persons amongst newly self-employed people is explained by what type of education they have, that is, a highly educated specialised occupation or educations at high and low levels…

  • The strength of ethnic ties

    Open Access•Martin Klinthall, Susanne Urban•ARTICLE•Urban Studies•2016•Cited by: 4•References: 29

This study analyses whether ethnic segregation leads to social isolation and lack of access to valuable informal channels into the labour market. We use a survey of Swedish-born young adults in Stockholm, whose parents were born either in Turkey (Stratum T) or in Sweden (Stratum S). Stratum T was randomly sampled, whereas Stratum S was sampled according to the residential distribution of Stratum T. Our results show that persons in Stratum T use i…

    Martin Klinthall, Susanne Urban•ARTICLE•Journal of Immigrant & Refugee…•2014•References: 39

This study investigates the importance of co-ethnic employment for second-generation immigrants using data on the total population of Sweden. The analyses show that employment by parents comprises a substantial part of co-ethnic employment among young people. However, youth of Swedish origin in the small business sector are employed by parents to the same extent as second-generation immigrants. Furthermore, youth of Swedish origin are much more o…

This study uses data from the Swedish population and tax register, and follows the routes of employees in the sector from 2003 to 2008. The conclusion is that work experience in the restaurant sector can be considered an important stepping stone to other parts of the labour market. However, it is more common among individuals with foreign-…

  • Is the Neighbourhood Effect an Economic or an Immigrant Issue? A Study of the Importance of the Childhood Neighbourhood for Future Integration into the Labour Market

    Open Access•Susanne Urban•ARTICLE•Urban Studies•2009•Cited by: 13•References: 29

The purported effects of concentrations of immigrants and poverty within cities on inclusion in the labour market are intensively discussed among politicians and researchers. This study uses a multilevel approach to analyse a large longitudinal dataset in Stockholm. The results confirm previous research that concludes that only a small fraction of socioeconomic output can be considered to be a result of neighbourhood origin. Moreover, it is concl…

  • Rekommodifieringen av taxibranschen - förändring av ekonomiska förhållanden och etnisk sammansättning

    Susanne Urban, Zoran Slavnic•ARTICLE•Dansk Sociologi•2008

  • On the Rise of the House of Rothschild and the Death of Anne Frank

    Susanne Urban•ARTICLE•European Judaism•2003

Before 1933 Frankfurt was home to the second largest Jewish community in Germany after Berlin. After the Shoah, only a small Jewish remnant remained in Germany. Still, the city on the banks of the river Main remained the second largest Jewish community. This ‘tradition’ ended after 1991 with the immigration of Jews from the former Soviet Union and nowadays more Jews live in Munich than Frankfurt
