In-Group Bias in the Indian Judiciary: Evidence from 5 Million Criminal Cases
We study judicial in-group bias in Indian criminal courts using newly collected data on over 5 million criminal case records from 2010–2018. After classifying gender and religious identity with a neural network, we exploit quasi-random assignment of cases to judges to determine whether judges favor defendants with similar identities to themselves. In the aggregate, we estimate tight zero effects of in-group bias based on shared gender or religion…
Impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on health care utilization for commercial and Medicaid beneficiaries with opioid use disorder
Introduction We sought to examine how COVID-19 affected opioid use disorder (OUD)-specific health care utilization for insured individuals with preexisting OUD during the first year of the pandemic
Homophily and transmission of behavioral traits in social networks
Causal association between self-reported fatigue and coronary artery disease: A bidirectional two-sample Mendelian randomization analysis
The MR analysis reveals a causal relationship between self-reported fatigue and CAD. The results should be interpreted with caution due to horizontal pleiotropy
Eliciting social stressors, supports, and determinants of health through the DSM-5 cultural formulation interview
Our work shows that social determinants of mental health can be elicited through the CFI. Future work should examine how this information is included in clinicians' formulations and whether the cultural formulation approach would benefit from additional revision to facilitate assessment of socio-structural factors
Patient identity narratives through the cultural formulation interview in a New York City outpatient clinic
Anthropologists have critiqued cultural competence programs in medical settings while introducing mental health clinicians to social theories on culture for practice. We explore how patients articulated narratives about themselves and how clinicians responded to such narratives through an intervention known as the Cultural Formulation Interview that anthropologists have helped develop. We conducted over 500 hours of fieldwork from 2014 to 2019 at…
Homophily and Transmission of Behavioral Traits in Social Networks
Innovation and possible long-term impact driven by Covid-19: Manufacturing, personal protective equipment and digital technologies
Mass fatality preparedness among medical examiners/coroners in the United States: A cross-sectional study
The three measures of MFI preparedness allowed for a broad and comprehensive assessment of preparedness. In the future, these measures can serve as useful benchmarks or criteria for assessing ME/Cs preparedness. The study findings suggest multiple opportunities for improvement, including the development and implementation of national strategies to ensure uniform standards for MFI management across all jurisdictions
The Perceived Ethnic Discrimination Questionnaire—Community Version: Validation in a multiethnic Asian sample
This study evaluated the validity and reliability of the Perceived Ethnic Discrimination Questionnaire-Community Version (PEDQ-CV) Lifetime Exposure scale in a multiethnic Asian sample (N = 509). The 34-item scale measures perceived interpersonal racial/ethnic discrimination and includes four subscales assessing different types of discrimination: Social Exclusion, Stigmatization, Discrimination at Work/School, and Threat/Aggression. The Lifetime …
Dimensions of Perceived Racism and Self-Reported Health: Examination of Racial/Ethnic Differences and Potential Mediators
Our results suggest that noxious effects of race-related exclusion and threat transcend between-group differences in discriminatory experiences. The effects of race-related exclusion and threat on health, however, may operate through different mechanisms
Apparent Universality of Positive Implicit Self-Esteem
Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study found that even though children from all East Asian countries outperformed American children, American students reported higher self-evaluation of their math and science abilities than did students from East Asian countries such as China, Korea, and Japan (Mullis, Martin, Gonzalez, & Chrostowski, 2004). Such cross-cultural differences in self-appraisal fit the stereotype of the modest East Asi…
