  • Phonological planning in Cantonese–English bilingual speech production

    Open Access•Andus Wing-Kuen Wong, Terri Yuen-King Ng et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2025

Purpose: Findings from previous speech production research suggest that the nature of phonological planning units is language-specific, with phonemes as the planning units in Dutch and English but syllables in Cantonese and Mandarin Chinese. However, little is known about how multilingual speakers possessing languages with distinctive phonological planning units plan for their speech. This study was conducted to investigate the roles of syllable …

  • Second language experience influences salience of phonological units in spoken word production in the first language

Open Access•Jie Wang, Andus Wing-Kuen Wong et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

Research question: Previous research suggests that the grain size of primary phonological units (PUs) in spoken word production is language-specific (e.g., phonemic segments in Germanic languages, and atonal syllables in Chinese). When the two languages of bilingual speakers have different primary PUs in their native speakers, will first language (L1) phonological processing be influenced by second language (L2) experience? Methodology: In a pict…

    Li-Jing QIU, Sui-Ping WANG et al.•ARTICLE•Acta Psychologica Sinica•2013

  • Independent Effects of Orthographic and Phonological Facilitation on Spoken Word Production in Mandarin

Open Access•Qingfang Zhang, Qingfang Zhang Qingfang Zhang et al.•ARTICLE•Language and Speech•2009•Cited by: 1•References: 24

A picture—word interference paradigm with visually presented distractors was used to investigate the independent effects of orthographic and phonological facilitation on Mandarin monosyllabic word production. Both the stimulus-onset asynchrony (SOA) and the picture—word relationship along different lexical dimensions were varied. We observed a pure orthographic facilitation effect and a pure phonological facilitation effect, and found that the pa…

  • Developmental Study of the Reversed Stroop Effect in Chinese-English Bilinguals

    Hsuan-Chih Chen, Suk‐han Connie Ho et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of General Psychology•1986•References: 1

Chinese-English bilinguals in Grades 2, 4, 8, 10, and in college read Chinese and English color words in black or in colored print in the corresponding language. Subjects were more efficient in reading Chinese than English. This superiority effect of reading Chinese gradually decreased as subjects' familiarity with English increased. Furthermore, skilled readers were less susceptible than less skilled readers to the introduction of conflicting co…
