Bullying in children and adolescents
Bullying is a well-known problem among children, adolescents and young adults in USA. It has been associated with subsequent development of violent behaviors. In this article we are reviewing the medical and clinical aspects of bullying in children and adolescents, as well as providing recommendations to minimize its impact
Bullying and its consequences
On October 26th, 2012, there was yet another story reported by the New York Times of bullying and again with dire consequences. This time it was a 15-year-old, Felicia Garcia who after being taunted at her school because “she had piercings and lived in foster care” decided to throw herself in front of an oncoming train (Yee, 2012, p. A27). We were still reeling from another incident not long before of Rutgers student, Tyler Clementi who had been …
Bullying and its consequences
In the previous volume we presented a series of contributions by a number of leading scholars that meant to provide a foundation regarding the current research on bullying and a brief discussion of
Adoption Across Race, Culture and Class
The adoption experience brings to those involved a number of challenges that require sensitive and careful handling, especially during the critical developmental stages when the issue of identity is of paramount importance for the adoptee. In this introduction we highlight some of these challenges and discuss the central issues covered by the contributions included in this special issue. What emerges from all these manuscripts is the importance o…
Predictors of Moral Reasoning
The aim of the current study was to determine whether components of executive functioning and two diverging aspects of religiosity (scriptural literalism and quest) are significant predictors of postconventional moral reasoning. An additional goal of the study was to determine whether components of executive functioning moderate the relationship between religiosity and postconventional moral reasoning. Postconventional moral reasoning was assesse…
Assessing the effect of community violence in minority children
The purpose of the present study was to assess the extent to which minority inner city children were adversely affected when exposed to violence in their homes and in their communities. The findings from this study suggested that Hispanic children endorsed the highest levels of physiological cues and somatic complaints from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder symptomatology compared with groups of African-American and Caucasian children. The importanc…

The limitations of traditional, descriptive assessment are noted. A contextual explanatory model is suggested. Emphasis is given to the need for multidimensional personality assessment that will effectively evaluate multicultural and multiethnic populations

Vicissitudes of autobiographical memories in a bilingual analysis.
In this article, I address a number of important issues regarding the nature of repression in bilingual analyses. Repressed memories are assumed to hold the key to pathological formations and to the development of transferential manifestations that arise in attempts to work through the conflicts associated with these memories. The nature and quality of the individual's dreams, as well as the whole associative process, are also assumed to be influ…

Urban Poverty, Ethnicity, and Personality Development
There are multiple factors which contribute to the development of the individual’s personality. Many of these factors have been amply discussed in traditional theories of personality Jonnation. An area that has been neglected in these discussions has been the role that poverty and ethnic and cultural factors may have in this regard. This paper offers a discussion of these issues with special emphasis on cultural, ethnic, and socioeconomic factors…

Etiological patterns of child abuse and neglect
A review of the various etiological possibilities for child abuse and neglect, designed to offer an additional and different possibility. Consideration is first given to problems, namely the lack of universal definition, heterogeneous effects, and retrospective research. The probability of multifactor models is noted, and sexual abuse is given separate consideration, followed by an exploration of the existing models termed ecological, transaction…

Sources of Family Violence
AbstratThis paper suggests a direction for the exploration of the causes of family violence. Explanatory models offamily violence were considered in this regard, with the recommendation that a multi-determined model should be considered to ensure the most accurate explanation. We suggest that family violence will be best understood and prevented or alleviated, if a model is used that considers the interaction of structural violence and the person…
Introduction to the Special Issue on a Multicultural View of Domestic Violence
Introduction to Another Special Issue on a Multicultural View of Domestic Violence
Since our publication of the special issue on a multicultural perspective on domestic violence by this journal (Vol. 3, No. 1, 1994), there has been an explosion of media coverage about this issue, partly precipitated by the O. J. Simpson story. Following the sensational coverage on television of the minute details of that incident, it appears that the number of reports of domestic violence increased substantially, and the society experienced a p…
