Is there differential engagement in urban flooding prevention in Detroit
Urban flooding is a matter of pressing concern in the city of Detroit. The increase in precipitation in recent years, together with the city’s aging infrastructure put many residents at risk of financial losses, displacement, and detrimental health outcomes. The current study aims to identify potential determinants of residents’ engagement or a lack thereof in flood prevention. The study found that the extent of flooding that residents had previo…

Merging Developmental and Feminist Evaluation to Monitor and Evaluate Transformative Social Change
Programs seeking to challenge and change gender and power relationships require a nimble, evolving monitoring, evaluation, and learning (MEL) system that helps make sense of how nonlinear complex social change happens. This article describes efforts by Oxfam Canada to develop such a system for a women’s rights and gender equality program. The system, which we call a feminist learning system (FLS), is an interconnected, nonlinear system that emerg…
Voices from the Field
Wildland fire management agencies manage wildland fires for resource benefit while protecting firefighter and public safety. Firefighting fatalities and property damaged by wildfires prompt reviews aimed at preventing similar accidents. The principles of high-reliability organizing (HRO) have been used to analyze such unexpected, high-consequence events. However, fire managers who agree to the value of an HRO framework often have difficulty apply…
No Shortcuts to Shifting Deep Structures in Organisations
In the late 1990s an international feminist network, Gender at Work, wrote about the ‘deep structure’ of organisations through which gender discriminatory norms and power relations are reproduced. In this article, the authors reflect on the evolution since the Fourth World Conference on Women held in Beijing in 1995 of Gender at Work's theory and practice on approaches to shift deep structure. The Gender at Work Analytical Framework, used by doze…
Capturing changes in women's lives
Current trends in the aid environment pose significant challenges for effectively evaluating gender equality and women's rights programmes. This requires approaches that can capture and tell the complex story of how gender power relationships are challenged and changed. This article describes Oxfam Canada's efforts to develop a mixed-methods approach to monitoring, evaluation, and learning rooted in feminist evaluation principles, for Engendering…
Measurement of Stigma in People with HIV
Stigma associated with HIV infection can unfavorably impact the lives and behavior of people living with HIV/AIDS. The HIV Stigma Scale was designed to measure the perception of stigma by those who are HIV infected. Reanalysis of the psychometric properties of this scale was conducted in a new sample of 157 individuals living with HIV/AIDS in rural New England. This resulted in revision of the scale: shortening it from 40 to 32 items and retainin…
The use of grammatical morphemes reflecting aspect and modality by children with specific language impairment
Children with specific language impairment (SLI) have well-documented problems in the use of tense-related grammatical morphemes. However, in English, tense often overlaps with aspect and modality. In this study, 15 children with SLI (mean age 5;2) and two groups of 15 typically developing children (mean ages 3;6 and 5;3) were compared in terms of their use of previously studied morphemes in contexts that more clearly assessed the role of aspect.…
Exploring new worlds in American Romani Studies
Borrowing from Marshall Sahlins’s recent constructive criticism of anthropology, we examine some of the fundamental assumptions invoked in Romani studies since its inception. Utilizing interactions with the same groups of Roma over half a century allows testing those assumptions against actual fieldwork. We contrast the concept of romanía (‘Gypsyness’) with the scholars’ concept of ‘real Gypsy’ and document many changes in attitudes and practices…

Missionaries and Mandarins
Telling the Indian Urban
End-of-century demographic information reveals that a surprisingly large number of Indian people—almost half of the approximately two million who identified themselves as Native American in the last census—now live away from reservation and trust lands. Except for the fact that the American Indian population is significantly younger and growing more rapidly than that of the nation as a whole—a fact which has been true for decades but is confoundi…
Xanthogranuloma of the choroid plexus in the fat-tailed dwarf lemur (Cheirogaleus medius)
This report documents the death of two fat-tailed dwarf lemurs (Cheirogaleus medius) maintained over 6 years each in our laboratory. Postmortem studies revealed xanthogranuloma of the choroid plexus, a mass replete with stored lipids, including cholesterol crystals. Six months prior to their deaths, both animals developed a peculiar head tilt and signs suggestive of neurological dysfunction. At autopsy, each had masses projecting into the lateral…

Geneva - the key to equality
Inter-war feminists converged on Geneva seeking international action to raise the status of women. They believed that support from the League of Nations would strengthen national efforts to combat the anti-feminist reaction caused by the Depression and the rise of conservative ideologies. During the 1930s, demands for an equal rights treaty exposed tactical and ideological tensions among women's groups. While all women's groups active in Geneva s…

of her work even more problematic than is true for most writers. Her critical reputation has been frequently compromised by biases against her economic class, her expatriation to France, and the persistent but largely inaccurate public image of Wharton as a prig. The enlightening attention given to correcting some of these inaccuracies in R.W.B. Lewis's 1976 biography has helped to clarify the genuine character of her contributions to American fi…
